This question regards midi setup for a Yamaha Motif, Emu Planett Phatt and Emu Orbit, MPC and Yamaha AW 2816 HD recorder

I want to set up the Motif to control the two EMU sound modules....How can I accomplish this? How does the MPC fit into this chain? I also want to use the MPC exclusively for drums...and sync the AW 2816 to it all for recording.....Do I need a midi patchbay?

I would set up the modules Planet Phatt and the Orbit on The MPC's MIDI OUT A. First run a midi cable from the Orbits Midi IN to the Planet Phatt's Midi Thru. Next I would run a cable from the Planet Phatt's midi In to the to the MPC's Midi Out A. Now go into your modules master screen and turn midi enable channels 9-16 off on the Planet Phatt and channels 1-8 on the Orbit. This allows you to have 8 channels for each. Trust me it's more than enough.

As for the Motiff I would run my first midi cable from the MOtif's Midi IN to the MPC's Midi OUT B and the second one from the Motif's Midi Out to the MPC Midi In 2. The first line we routed to the MPC's Midi Out B allows you to play and record your midi data to the MPC's sequencer, the second one allows you to use your Motiff as a controller.

As for the Work station you will need to look up the syncing paramaters/settings in your manual. However, your midi cable will run from the Workstations out to the MPC's Midi In 1.

As for synching them up it depends on which route you take, MTC, midi clock. These are your midi options.

Good luck
