Inspiration is where it all begins (with me at least)
The work flow varies, no particular science or method per se.
I just adhere to normal Hip Hop song structure "for the most part" and this is in essence is my forumula for laying down my beatz.
Understanding the idea of how to properly sequence your tracks is vital. (intro, verse, hook, ......etc.)
Anyone Noob reading this learn how to count bars (for starters) and examine some people music you like by counting the bars when there intro, verse, hook, bridge (if any) appear.
This will help you get a idea how to structure your music.
You don't have to sequence tracks in the same manner as
your favorite artist, just understand at least what there doing
and put it down in your own way.

But back to the steps, one day I might go diggin and come back with something to chop.
Just experiment with the pieces i have chopped up and implement
them into a drum pattern i might have poppin off.
Or I might actually sequence the samples 1st and then layer with
a drum pattern.
Understand that different styles of production & "producer mood swing"
all drive us in the direction we will go to produce a track a particular day.
All the greats i have read or seen in the studio, don't have a "Beat Making Guideline" that they follow daily.
One day a Melody may pop up in my mind while driving, so i'll start with that soon as i hit the studio. Normally a 8 bar melody would be its core foundation.
Then to flip it again, i might just bang out a drum pattern and build a Melody around it.
Adhere to the basic concepts of song structure & music theory
and let your imagination take your music where its telling
you to go.
Follow your ear & heart, not a set of rules & regulations for making beatz and you'll be cool.
* I had to mention the above because some Noob's will read this thread and be like "Oh, I have to do it like this"
That's not the case, learn from others but set out your own path of production methods & a signature sound of your own so you can
set yourself apart like your "idols" did.
