Why don't y'all tell Premo and Pete Rock that 128 MB is necessary to make beats?

The way I take it is this: These machines were designed in a different era.
Computers were basically not in the picture yet for recording etc. The internet was not really in existance yet. And: there were no loop cds, sample cds etc. You made your own samples and sequenced them from scatch(I think people still do this - I'm not sure though).
The reason why the still make this machine is because it's absolutely genious, a true 20th century technological marvel! Like all the brothers that came before, the 60,3000,Linn Drum,Sp1200.
Anyone that complains about memory should think about sound quality first. That is the main reason why I like the 2000XL is the sounds jump out of the box! It sounds like they've been mastered already!

i'm not sure why people keep jocking the fact that good beats have been and will continue to be made on the XL. unless i'm mistaken, we all know this. just as we all know the 60 and 1200 are still much loved and cherished machines. i took the questions as being 'is 32Mb enough to lay down awesome tracks?' i'm sure many people would say yes in most all cases (since that seems to be the concensus).
right now i'm researching on whether i want to buy a 2000xl or 1000. i'm reading and measuring people's pros and cons. i really like the layout of the 2000xl, including its lovable pads, but i also like having a cheap built-in harddrive (i mean, come on, hard drive and usb-to-computer or built-in zip drive or scsi to zip drive?).
but on topic, we know a good BEAT can be made with 32Mb of RAM, but what's the limits for a dope TRACK (instrumental/in-depth)?

maybe some people should give examples of when and why they ran out of RAM making a track, and maybe some others should show what tracks they've made using "only" 32Mb of RAM. that would be nice in my opinion. maybe even helpful.

Card readers dog, get with the times. They can hold 2 gigs. No need for a harddrive IMO

hah, yea man, i'm trying. i've wanted an mpc for more years than i care to share. some years back i started buying all my dj equipment, and now i'm looking into mpcs again. this time around i have some money, though.
i won't bombard you with off topic questions (like the advantages of card readers over zips and jaz disks, though hopefully they're cheaper), but thanks for at least enlightening me with this new technology (half playful sarcasm, half serious 'cause i don't know anything about these card readers). i'll see what the search button turns up.
and though i do agree that a harddrive is not a necessity, i would still consider it a nice luxury. always there with you and 20 to 100Gb for less than $100 in most cases (i got a Toshiba 80Gb for like $60 something shipped). to use Nym's metaphor; that's a big room.

A card reader drive can read a variety of card storage formats including compact flash cards

Hard drive is definitely a nice addition, but definitely not necessary. I got an 80gb in mine and i can take all my beats and all my samples with me wherever.

The 128mb is good for me. I'm using the direct recording feature a lot on the 2500 now and it takes up quite a few mb's recording a whole track to WAV. Plus i can mix down my songs into a WAV all within the MPC.

But it's good for me as i don't need a mixer now to record my proteus into the MPC.

Just depends how you plan to use it. Obviously people don't need 128mb to make hot beats, that's a no-brainer. It just gives that bit more flexibility to the workflow.
