"Signs"

I have the sound from my laptop going into the record in jacks on 1k so i can utilize the input thru feature. Using standard sound card with cable running out of standard stereo headphone jack on pc to 2 mono 1/4" plugs into stereo ins on 1k. It works and the soft synths i have sound good, but the software im running itself creates a strange humming noise, i have tried different software fl studio, korg legacy collection etc. the same noise, i believe the noise is created from whatever cpu process the software goes through in order to be running on the computer. How can you get rid of this friggin noise, what is the solution, turning down record gain lessens the problem, but if you get closer to the monitors its still there, and if have to turn record gain down to much. If you ever saw the movie "Signs" about the aliens, it sounds kind of like the baby monitors that the kid kept listening to.

Try running the laptop from battery only and see if the noise goes away. If it does, you might have a grounding issue. This can be 'solved' in a couple of ways, the easiest of which is to buy a 3 pin to 2 pin plug adapter (if you're in the US, that is). Of course, the usual disclaimers about the potential hazards of running ungrounded equipment apply.

Another option would be to buy an external (Firewire or USB) soundcard since that is less likely to pick up noise from the rest of the laptop.

Keep loads of water and a baseball bat lying around, just to be on the safe side ... you never know

I had the same problem with my laptop...This thing works great..

That thing looks handy. Beats running ungrounded.

But check that this is the problem by running the laptop unplugged first - as Lone Diplomat says, it could be as simple as a cable after all.

Thats true too..Just don't get one of those hum elimnators, becuase they kill your bass big time..My homie has one due to the fact of a certain type of lightin in his house so he was gettin some noise from his emu mp-7.He bought a hum eliminator, and it worked, but killed the bass..This radio shack one works like a charm for me..
