Pitch Shifting and The Key of a Sample

I find myself not wanting to pitch shift samples because I always find it hard to find the key after. A few times when ive done it the key seemed to be inbetween two notes and there was just no way for me to get it.

How many semitones equal a half step up the key board? And how many equal an octave?

Dam know one knows or what?

maybe you can find/play the tonic of the sample you want to work on.
then use the pitch to go up or down, each number is a semitone (ex. +1 is 1 semitone higher).

one semitone up would be the very next key up (white or black) and vice versa for one semitone down... an 'octave' is 12 semitones (up or down) from the original key...
