This may be something everyone knows, but GET ORGANIZED!!! Make sure you name your sounds and disk's. Oh and sample as loud as you can without distortion. I found that I worked alot better when I could find stuff.

Only my snares, and chops.

Thats a rookie mistake...

Ive noticed alot of people start to do this after they get to a certain point in their production careers (Myself in included). And then u find better ways to quantise where it sounds more realistic.

That's cool and all, but the beats that I've heard from The Afection Project on myspace.com sounds dope. Some of the beats sound like 9th Wonder. Crazy ill. Way better than my ish. Peace.

I mean...if you cant play kicks along with yo beat, get some rythmn...or a metronome or some shit.

Rookie mistake = Timing 1/8 *Holds Note Repeat*

On the same line of thinking, save each beat in it's own folder. You don't want to **** up existing programs by overwriting old sounds with new sounds that have the same name.
