MPC1000s in the UK

Bah, no one seems to have one in stock - Soundslive say a couple of weeks and Turnkey have none until the 12th of Feb.

Guy at Arbiter says: "There still aren't many MPC1000s available in the country"

but your right i hunted high and low for one before i found that one at SL and of course jumped on it when i did.

Well, I'm a few quid short still while I wait for an ebayer to cough up some dough, so I can wait a couple of weeks...

In the meantime I have the manual to read from cover to cover for the 43rd time, and of course this site to browse while I should be working.

How are you finding yours so far?

it's cool, its my first mpc so i cant comment on differences but i'm been having a play and while i've not produced any banging beats yet i've got the hang of the sequencer already without really even needing to dive into the instruction manual.

but now i've wiped the memory of internal sounds and i'm just about to start building my own programs (drum kit, vocal samples etc) so i can start making "my own" music. which meant last weekend was spent up to my neck in chintzy furniture and secondhand clothes while i explored the various charity shops in my area for old vinyl to sample from.

one thing that does suck though is the lack of soul/jazz/funk type records available in the uk. i guess its because the old people who donate their vinyl in the uk just didnt have it in their collections. so its down to buying it from some fairly specialist shops which all seem to be pretty expensive

why not make some british music instead of copying americans?

See what is in the junk shops, records by the goons, tony hancock, stanley unwin, welsh choirs may be interesting places to start..

don't get me wrong i've already picked up some morcambe & wise, performances by the london philharmonic, uk tv theme tunes, some uk ska and a few bits of other stuff that would give my samples that british twist. but as far as the musical sound i am aiming for its the funk/soul kind of breaks/sounds/samples that i am looking for and my observations from my first experiences of diggin recently is that these are pretty much in short supply unless you are willing to pay silly prices...

I don't think it's as simple as making 'british' music, as opposed to copying American music. If like me you've been listening to hip-hop for 16/17 years as your primary influence, I'd say your own music is highly likely to bear some of those influences. The funk/jazz area will naturally form a pretty good percentage of your source material, unless you are really out on the fringes making experimental stuff. Personally I always start with a hip-hop base, but I grew up in a very different environment to that which many of the hip-hop producers I admire did, so therefore I try and make sure my music reflects *all* my influences.

Got mine on Sat the 7th of Feb from Turnkey, they also said they will have more in today. Also they are seling them at £599!

They also have them at Soundcontrol under Virgin Records in Oxford street.

This is my first MPC and its wicked, spent all weekend playing on it. All I need now is a USB cable so that I can hook it up with my PC.

I know, I read your post and thought I would try my luck with them, I think it was one that they had allocated to someonelse, but he was happy to sell it to me, and I was happy to buy it.

They should have four into today if you are interested...and I think that is the cheapest you can get em in the UK.

They and Soundslive are both doing them for £599.
