good input and good ideas fellers!
am no expert so i can't give so called suggestions! just some ideas what i ofthen do:
1. bd: recently i've found out that for me one channel on the mixer for the bd's is not enough! similar as for hh, and snares (but that's mor for dnb!)! the more there are available the better it is!
2. some sounds must run at least 2 or 3 times through the mixer (external)! eg: send the snare or anything thru a (eg) light distortion which comes back in a channel and send it there to a reverb, delay!
3. have next to non experience with swing! up til now i've quantized quite strictly, switching some sounds manually! but dubmonkeys approach sounds very interesting! but i think the value of swing is a bit related to the kind of music, techno, house u wanna do! i mean if u just wanna make straight techno ...
4. as djadoni says to get some swing i use a lot of effects! esp. reverb, delay! if you run many sounds thru the same effect they sound as they stick together (damn my english, hope this was understandable!)
5. delays: i also like if one is for example set on 1/16 and another one makes some 1/8 (3) or 1/4 (3)! gets quit dubby!
6. one i really like: try to run your hihats thtu a vocoder! and play that one with your keyboard (in this case the hihats trigger the melody your playin with the keyboard: beautyful! (btw: don't know how the mpc voc is! sometimes vocs sound really weird, than u have to fix the vocoder settings! if that doesn't work switch it! it doesn't suit always, but sometimes its just amazin!)) and important: add (as nearly always) some kind of delay or reverb to it!
7. even it the mpc is great! ... for synth sounds have a look at a virus (i use one! ... its excellent!), nordlead or novation! basically in terms of sound quality the virus does in my case with synth sounds what the mpc does with the percussion part! ... he just does it!
8. compressor! sorry no answer here, e.d.e. don't have an external one but i think to get one! so a question and hope for some suggestions! basically in my music makin i run 10 outs from the mpc and 6 from the virus to my mixer, on which i can send 6 fxs out! currently i have two reverb, delay machines, wah-wah and dist.! what is really missing is a compressor! but since i've nearly non experience with compressors some questions: is it possible to set a compr. in that way so that i can use it for all my sounds comin in the mixer or is this too little (do i have to set compr. values for each sound separately?)! any suggestions bout the use of compressors (how to use them sensfull for different sounds (bd,sn, ..)would be great for this topic!
cheers

the good old trick:
running the kickdrum and the subbassline through a compressor at the same time makes that pumping sound.

neadle! (or anyone) can u please tel me somethin more bout compr, kickdrum, subbass, ...!
1. do you sample eg. kick separately rom subbas (with different compr. settings)? or
2. can (does it make sense) you run it over the same send fx on your external compr. (which has obviously just one setting at each time) so that you basically just have one compr. setting, run each of your sounds on a channel on your mixer and fix the level of the compr. sound there (per channel)?
i m thinking of buyin one (if 2 is the case)! if i have to set the compr. value for each sound separately cause the compr. changes the characteristic of each sound in a very different way i m thinkin of gettin a digital mixer with built in fx (including compr.!)
thanx
alto
btw: i like external and analogue fx's! have an old wah, wah (cry baby) here whcih is actually made for guitar players! have also some digital and built in (mpc) wha, wha's! ... but those are by far not like the cry baby! try to run your wah, wah over your beat or parts of it, ... filters too, but differently! ... adding of course some rev (afterwards) or delay(pre and afterwards)! one additional major advantage of that: you control it with your food, so both of your hands are free to turn on some other knowbs, q-link, mixer, whatever, ...
cheers

Ulli, you've heard the tune on soundclick....its was called: '....and it's all about you'
basically the bd is compressed but there is a direct out coming out f the bass drum channel feeding the key input of the compressor i have over the bass line....so every time the bass drum hits it triggers the compressor to compress the bass line....
if the 4k doesn't except snd let us know and ill save em as wavs....
the mpc wont contract a virus from your pc- different beasts....

dubmonkey!
am listening to your song 'and its all ...' right now! its getting better and better! due to my speakers i ve to correct somethin on my mixer! now i also hear the small and tiny background things! really nice!
compr. bd and bass: do you use different compr. for bd and bass or is it one and the same compr?
my virus shit: know that it won't affect the mpc! but i ever more like the idea of gettin completely rid of my pc when music makin! f*** the aksys and usb thing! it'd be just a bloody work now reset it up again, install everythin, install translator, convert it, ... my cdrw should come within a week!
just wanted to inform with my post that it will take a bit till i m analyzin your song! am lookin forward! ... and don't worry i'll come back with feedback (whichs purpose won't just be to tell u: wow that's a great song, be aware i'll be critic too, o.k.?) and questions on it!
cheers meanwhile
alto
PS: if its no big deal for u, you could convert your files in wavs and resend it to me! if that means effort, don't do it! i'll do that ... later!

he he he - the reason its only a beat is cos thats what it is....a beat- haven';t yet got roiund to writing with it as im trying to finish the other ten tunes i started since.....
but you have a virus right...i think i may have left a midi seq in there why not plu that channel into your virus (i make no claims that the data in that midi sequnce is useble or any good- haven't accessed that beat in ages...

stangely its dub-munkey.....he he he....
there are no songs up there at the mo...ive taken down the one that was as its about 2 years old now and not really where im at.....
i use a dbx 266xl but am after a meek c2, a penta or might check out the fmr....have used the alesis 3630 which is better than the behringer model but they are not v musical compressors...the dbx is much nicer but is still not high end-
i suggest you get a good cheap compressor like the alesis or the dbx and then if you feel you need more you go for a more expensive model...
