Why does Pad187 cut off my sample file name and ruin my life

So I spent the past few days organizing my MPC hard drive and creating programs with pad187.
After making a couple dozen programs I got Wrong File! when I tried to load them up on the MPC.

So back on the laptop (MPC is connected) i load up the pgms again. It turns out that somehow pad 187 has shortened the file names cutting them down to like 16 characters. Only the files that had short names still work.

Why does pad187 chop off the names and is there a solution other than changin the names of 100s of breaks, samples, hits, and stabs?!

Do a batch process to rename the whole lot in Audacity or Peak or whatever.

What is a batch process and can I use any other program to do it- like PT or maybe pad187 itself.<-- if I used the export function in pad187 would it export the sounds back out with a different file name? (maybe?)


I have so many sounds that I cant use cuz of this shit and I just want to get the pgms made and get back to making beats

what kind of sound card do you use? if you're talking about breaks and shit, why don't you just run a line from your computer (spdif preferred) into your mpc? sample em and save em w/ your own naming system

if not, yeah i know the whole file name thing is annoying - but the mpc doesn't have a keyboard so it kind of makes sense you know?

I do all my sound editing and sound card stuff through my Mbox.

All the breaks and samples are files I did not sample myself but i found all over the net.

What is batch process? I have access to Audacity and right now that seems like the easiest answer- if it does what i think it does.

I could easily allow you to put in longer file names. But you might not like it when the MPC doesn't load any of your samples.

The limit comes from the MPC's file format--16 characters max for sample names. The new Version 1.2 of MPC Pad 187 is out today (see http://www.mpc-forums.com/viewtopic.php?t=52797). Doesn't do anything about the naming limits with the MPC but is a recommended download.

Ive got no beef with the program itself. Its a tight program
i'm just tryin to find a solution to changing file names without having to go through 2000+ sounds.

I have a feeling im gonna end up goin through all the files and shorten the names up myself

You should check this page out:

In a few minutes you could put together a little workflow that takes selected files, copies only the wav files to a specified location, and renames them to Something-##.wav in sequential order.

Something like this...
