Playing keyboard sounds with mpc 1000

this is probably really basic .....and I have read some previous threads but I am still not able to get it.

I am trying to connect my Yamaha PSR 290 keyboard with an MPC 1000
I have
•connected the midi out of the keyboard to the midi in of the Mpc
•connected the midi out of the Mpc to the midi in of the Keyboard
•All the tracks are active on the Mpc
•Type is switched to MIDI instead of Drum
•Midi: in the right corner is on

they are connected but not what I want. Right now I can play the keyboard and it triggers some samples in the MPC and vice versa I can play the MPC and it triggers sounds from the keyboard

I am trying to only have the sound coming out of the MPC.
I want to be able to hear the sounds (instruments) from my keyboard as I play the keyboard from the MPC.

Hopefully this all made sense.......and someone can help me cuz I have no clue. Thanks

you just have to connect to connect the midi out of
the controller to the midi in of the mpc.that's all

i hooked the midi cables up.....but is there a way for me to use the sounds from my keyboard also?

so the keyboard and mpc sounds come out of the MPC

Try turning "local" off in the keyboard. Then the keys in the board are sending info to the MPC only and not triggering internal sounds on the board. Record a sequence of notes and when the MPC plays back the sequence, it should trigger the sounds that the keyboard has loaded currently as long as they are on the same midi channel.

Is that what you want or do you want to assign a certain key on the keyboard to trigger both it's internal sounds and activate a pad on the MPC?

I have the local turned off on my keyboard, but I am still getting playback from its speakers - Im sure if that matters or if that is how it is supposed to be

Ya I am trying to do the first one you wrote......but I don't really think I make sense what I am asking

for instance - the keyboard has STRINGS loaded
while i am playing a drum sequence on the mpc can I play the STRINGS and have them recorded into my drum sequence on the MPC

and then change the STRINGS to another instrument such as PIANO

and do the same thing, so that I am layering everything onto the MPC

I think you're trying to get your keyboard sounds to play out of the MPC's stereo out's? MIDI only carries note & control information, not audio. So midi allows you to trigger the other instrument, that's all. You'll need a mixer to get 1 stereo out from the MPC and keyboard...

"local off" on the keyboard means the keys won't trigger the PSR's internal sounds...the notes from the keys are sent through MIDI to the MPC, then back thru MIDI to the Keyboard to play your strings or piano. It prevents "double triggers"...so if you left local on, the keyboard would trigger the sound internally, then trigger again when it got the notes back from the MPC MIDI.

Unless your keyboard is multi-timbral you will only be able to get one "sound" at a time out of it. Say you want to make a "strings" sequence. You can set the strings patch to midi channel 1 on the board and then record a sequence on the MPC on MIDI channel 1. When the seq is played back, it will send the notes back to the keyboard and play whatever patch is assigned to MIDI 1. If you are able to setup many patches with their own MIDI channels, then you can record sequences for each of them and have them all play back simultaneously.

Think of it like this. Some keyboard/synths have 4, 8, 16 etc individual "synths" in them and each of them can be treated like a different instrument. You can lay down a bassline with one, strings on another, drums on a third etc and as long as they all have their own MIDI channel, they can all be played back simultaneously. Many others though only have the ability to play back 1 instrument at a time. For that type, you may be better off playing the sound you want "live" and sampling it in to the MPC. You can then make a track out of that sample, change sounds on the keyboard and repeat the process until you have all the layers you want.
