Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000
By legend Sat Jun 17, 2006 6:27 pm
Was up everyone, I just wanted to know if anyone had a chance to check out that mpc like softwere called RS-16x that was featured in this addition of scratch magazine. If so what do you think of it. I hear it like having a mpc 2000xl on a computer. Its tha same dude that created that MPC PGMmaker softwere for the MAC OSX.

It wont be just like an MPC as the MPC is all about feel.

You cant replicate that feel with software, even if you have a pad controller.

I tried and failed so just bought a 2500!

Could still be a nice piece of software though, no doubt. It just aint no MPC

I would like to get it if it import and export mpc files like 2000xl. So I can go back and forth between the MPC and the RS-16x. I like the fact it has a syth in it.

yeh that looks the goods, seems to me that this could be similar to mpc editor, but it looks like they have incorpated a seqeucer, and the import and export of pgm's sn'd and seq's.

mpc or software......... its all ran from hardware at the base of all operations. the mpc is a computer ran by simple software. the "feel" is in your mind. i could probally understand the "feel" if the mpc had any machanical mechinisms that assisted in beat making, but it doesnt. "hype"
dont believe it.

ahha science you said it right there!

"the mpc is a computer ran by simple software. the "feel" is in your mind. i could probally understand the "feel" if the mpc had any machanical mechinisms that assisted in beat making, but it doesnt."

The feel is in your mind and the mind is the single most important thing when it comes to making music! I have Reason and some midi controllers... and I've had my mpc2000CL for about 3 weeks. And techinically Reason allows me to do everything that the MPC allows me to do and more. But let's face it, using the computer simply isn't as fun or creative as using an MPC. No way you can convince me that dragging and clicking and pushing control V and all the shit that goes along with a PC or Mac is as enthralling as doing it on the MPC. I wish I could explain it more eloquently and deeply, but I'm a little buzzed right now. Let me just put it this way, would you pick a flatscreen TV to hang on your wall that would change famous paintings on the screen every once in a while, or actually have a Van Gogh. Would you rather have a real fender rhodes or a superbly synthesized one on your computer. Vinyl or CD? I mean... you have to admit, even though TECHNICALLY you are correct there is such thing as feel.

Alright, not meaning to be disrespectful I just love this arguement and thought i'd put in my two cents, Peace!

Sorry, but it's more than just being "all in the mind". While the possibilities with many software programs, and even other hardware pieces, are vast, that's NOT what makes a great creation experience. Not to qualify myself, but I've used a crapload of sequencers over the years (starting with Performer back in '91, and various drum machines before that). The MPC has, without question, one of the most intuitive interfaces I've ever come across. It's first and foremost a drum machine, and being that, it adheres to the basic ebb and flow of a drum machine. MUCH different than most sequencers. And for that reason, most users adapt VERY quickly to the MPC and can operate it almost without thought. It's not extensive on features or options. It just does what it does. Whatever it is, it's not "hype", as people always say. It's just like the Synclavier. It had a large share of detractors in it's heyday, and even more once audio sequencers came of age, but pretty much every single person who actually used one would tell you that it's the most intuitive sequencer ever made. Even moreso than the MPC, it was virtually effortless to get your ideas down.

That said...I totally think a similar product/program to the MPC can be made. Guru, IMHO, is a step in the right direction, and the flow of programs like Live are also great things. I look forward to that day.
Peace

That's real.

I love the feel though.

alright, perhaps its not "all in your mind"... what I should have said it's all about being able to get whats in your mind down in the most effective way possible, aka being as intuitive as the MPC like you said. And while there are some good prgorams out there, such as Live, there is no MPC program. And I haven't heard anything say anything about FUN. I know I have more FUN making music on the MPC than using a computer program PERIOD. Anyone here disagree? I'll bet not... and it's a good bet on an MPC forum board hahaha.

Word! I've had fun with Live, but lord knows I always get more of a kick out of working with just the MPC.

Perhaps not mechanical (although a lot of people go on about those 16 rubber nipples aka pads) but there is definately someting about the workflow on the mpc that does IT for me. 8) The big advantage for me is that I don't get sidetracked while making a beat on the MPC, there are no infinite plugins or other vsti to dick around with, these limitations trigger my skills much more than any beatmaking software did. I also feel my drum programming improved since I no longer stare at a computer monitor but rely more on my ears when creating the beat.

ok ok ok, i can understand the user friendly interface, wich makes it easier on the workflow. but the mpc is not a magic beat making tool that feel from the sky for all us mortal peions to use for beat making. its all in you. not the mpc or software. :D
