2500 digital output - non-linear pcm?

does anyone know? This is probably the reason why the Pioneer DJM-800 doesn't recognize the digital out of the MPC-2500 (or 1000 for that matter).

The Pioneer DJM-800 only accpets linear pcm signal and I suspect that the MPC outputs non-linear pcm signal from its digital out.

THAT SUCKS if true. This is a HW limitation that is hard to change. No full digital path now if this is the case.

Not too sure. I had no problems using the digital out to my PC sound card and no problems connecting the digital in to my proteus 2000 or my stanton STR8-150 turntables.

What's pcm?

Pulse Code Modulation. The way analog signal is converted to digital.

In this case, I found that I could solve my problem by taking the digital out of the MPC input it to my Motu Ultralite S/PDIF input and then route that same signal back out through the S/PDIF out of the Motu unit and take that signal via S/PDIF and hook it up to the digital in of the pioneer DJM-800.

This apparently lets the MOTU convert the signal from a non-linear PCM signal (during its internal path) and then outputs it to a linear pcm signal.

Something the Pioneer understands.

Now that I've done all this, I wonder if the 1/4" line outs of the MPC routed into Line In (non digital) on the DJM sound better than the digital path. Might be too much jitter introduced in all the conversions going on. Can't be sure.

In any case, at least I've found a work around for the time being.
