my friend told me that on the other mpcs you can take one sound and create the different tones of that one sound so you could perhaps create a melody with the MPCs pads and one sound? i was just wondering if the MPC 1000 had the same ability, or an equivalent, and if so what's name of the operation?

Press the button on the front that says 16 levels, a screen opens up. Assign a pad by pressing the pad with the sound you want to use, and select TUNING. now you press any pad and have a variation of that same sample... you can also do this for volume level, etc... not just tuning. Try it and let me know how you like it.

toecutter, if i follow exactly as you said i can then, when i've worked out the melody, just press record from that point to record my work? and can i, when all the tones, from one sound, are spread over the sixteen pads keep pressing 16 levels so that i can, in real time, get more into the low or high pitched noises?
