sampling: morally wrong? your opinion

what do you guys think? i was born in a christian household, learning all commandments- one being not to steal(im being compltly real by the way.)

do you guys consider sampling from other vinyl, for example jazz or funk sealing? i mean we're not making the music ourselves, but on the other hand we are not completly using it only as it sounds, but use it as a fraction of a song, and construct many samples to make an original piece.

I could go on forever bout this. But, i think if you change the sample up a little, then i really wouldnt consider it stealing.

It depends. If your like diddy yes its wrong. Straight jackin a beat is wack, now if you sample sumthin and filter it or chop it- straight funk it up to the point of not even recognizing then it is music. Sampling is cool because you make a sonic collage of whatever you got. All different styles and genres of music are blended together to make something completly new and sounds rugged. When you really get into it, the sample becomes your sound. A guitarist plucks strings to produce a sound, we alter and modify or distort his sound to make our sound. But you have to change it or then it just is taking someone elses music and puttin your name on it. By the way we are producers, not musicians really (we are), but instead of hiring a keyboardist to come him, we sample Sun Ra. Instead of getting a horn player to lace 2-4 bars at 2am we sample a dusty old record. We are like composing with a band, only our band is samples.

Most of the time, I play with my samples so much, that no one is able to tell from where the sample came from. Some other times, I like to keep parts of the original melodie. I have never consider it as stealing, more like: giving them another life and another chance to shine again

Changing EQ etc dont change the fact that it aint yours.

I dont nuthing wrong with the way Diddy flips beats...He kinda good at it actually..You take something and make it work then your due some credit.

Whats wack, is if you take one of my beats for instance and str8 COPY it.

Its an art form...Some do it better than others!

i never said that brav. I said you eq it a little and add some effects. Play wit it. your puttin words in my mouth.

But he just goes and pays whatever the artist wants for that sample. Look at I'll be missin u. Straight JACKED. He adds a little elements but it must take him all of 10 minutes. The he gets millions in royalties. Stings gettin paid too, but a bedroom producer has more integrity because we have to. I don't have the money to sample Stevie Wonder so everyone knows its stevie, but I can sample him and chop it up then filter it. Now everyone thinks it's DJ Haze. Thats why I like broke indie or not super producers. I feel that there is more of a musical element to the piece. You can take snippets, but try to make em yours, not some rehashed loop with some new drums and a wicca-wicca. Thats really not to hard to do. Most of us can do that lovely, but we don't have the connections or prestige to release that on TRL and have old white ladies singin Mo' Money Mo' Problems just because they used to rock the original song 20 years ago. That's what makes songs like that crossover hits. Its the familarity of it.

as for direct record sampling, well, if u take a string sample, tune it, eq'it (take out the mids, or low end, etc), then apply some modulation delay, some reverb...etc...its own your own work.

you have now manipulated that sample...full stop.

i think that is what 247beatz is trying to say.

No more than taking a picture is stealing.

Diddy just takes pictures of Davinci's and Picasso's. (You need to licence them too to sell them.)

i like the guitar analogy allready discussed here, here's another way to possibly look at this: are the allies or executioners stealing when they put out a scratch album? they use recognizable tracks but they flip em so hard you can't think about wether or not it is stealing you just know it is fresh!
technically it is stealing. will you go to hell or will your church members throw stones at you? i hope not.

clipse's grindin was a straight up preset too (that big drum they use in the joom joom JOOM), they admit to that in interviews all the time. no big deal IMO! thats what the presets are there for. cheesy maybe but whatever (i love that song tho)

as for sampling, i took this motown stab yesterday... i was all set to use it as is but i knew it sounded too much like the original. it was a combination of fear of getting sued one day and just not wanting to use someone else's good stuff - so i changed it. i detuned it by a lot, like over an octave

it sounds nothing like the original and it's the best beat i done with the 1k yet

ive been sampling stuff to make songs (not always in one style) since 1987 when i was a little kid. it's a part of our culture. the jesus shî† just doesnt apply! dude that garbage is 2000 years old. who gives a crap what jesus said! make up your own mind

besides that, there are lots of places in this world where music doesnt belong to one person or another. it's just music. it's there for anyone to use to dance to or celebrate to or to chill with or whatever. granted, these cultures are evaporating like rubbing alcohol but the ideas are still cool.

jay-z sampling the doors was cool as hell! (was that just blaze or kanye w?)

if you cant decide if sampling can be artistic you need to bust out that copy of paul's boutique again. or put on some dj premiere. or listen to stockhausen or john cage if you dont like funky stuff

make good music first. worry about ethics when the dust settles. cuz if your music aint hot no one's gonna give a $hî† anyway!!

i dont know either but i will tell the truth right now. i aint particularly proud of this but here it goes anyway

im not into milkshake but i have been trying to rip off that thick a$$ bass sound since i heard that thing in the car like a month ago (or whenever it came out). i even bought a module cuz i thought it would get that sound
