Lamp, those Sandisk cards should be alright man. Unless the card itself is faulty.

In the meantime...

I've never had problems with sandisk outside of my mpc, whe I tried to use sony memory sticks 128mb and sandisks 64mb, I always had problems.

I stay with cf.

isnt 550mb the max partition size, i just stuck to using 512mb SD cards, cause i had the same problem with a 1gb SD, i could only format 550mb of it, unless i did it in windows disk manager, then it still didnt read that partition(winxp created) in the mpc file browser.

I've just been trying it now...

First I formatted a MS on my MPC (OS 1.20) and made sure I could read/write it on my PC. That was all good and I could swap files between machines easily. So I went to format my 2GB CF card on the MPC but it didn't give me an option to partition the card. I also couldn't partition the card on my PC. (Not suprising as I didn't think XP read multiple partitions anyway)
The last time I had to format/partition a disk was when I was using Zips, so bare with me... I expected to see the option to partition in the format screen. I wasn't sure if it had anything to do with the card being 2GB so I put my 32MB MS back in and I couldn't partition that either... and the same with my other two Sandisk CF cards (256MB and 512MB).

SO, is it 1.20?????

Lamp, I did some searching and found a post of yours where you quoted mpc3000 as saying...
1.2 does not add any "card specific" handling, just changes the MPC's 'format' operation to a PC's partition table style. Applies to hard drives, zips, SM, CF, PCMCIA drives.

The limit for this format is the same for FAT16: 2 Gig, non-partitionable.

...^Didn't know that^. I interpret that as saying you don't need to partition a 2GB (FAT) disk if you're running 1.20..? I found some other info on midicase and mpc2000xl.com which doesn't rule that out, but it doesn't confirm it either. I always thought the max disk size the MPC could recognise, even post 1.20, was less than 1GB ..I guess what Pt3r said proves that I was wrong, and also is another opinion/experience that would suggest the MPC might recognise a 2GB part.?

I just don't want to go ahead and risk doing what elfer did, ending up with a (somehow) f^cked card.

sorry for the **** long post

Elfer_, how did you partition your card? :?

BTW, Lampdog, as you might've read up above, I've been using MSs and Sandisk CF cards together for a while now without any problems. But I'm on 1.20 ...Maybe theres' something in that?...

It seems indeed that this partition option has disappeared in the v1.20 os there was another user who was not able to partition his external harddisk using os v1.20, he had to go back to os 1.14.

Word. But if I go back to 1.14, even if I can format the card into partitions, Windows wouldn't recognise it.

- Damn, it seems the question REMAINS. Nobody knows!

So if you use the 2 g card on os1.20 can u use the full 2G for storage or does it only give you 1g ?

This very day I am going to buy a CF of 512mg to seeing if it works well and remove myself of problems.
Thanks to all.

If you want, don't buy another card yet. Just wait another day or so and we'll see if we can figure this out.

It is obvious you are using an online translator. I thought about that and I'm sorry for the long messages.

Just answer one thing if you can... You said "I have done 2 partitions of 1gb but it does not work either." How did you format the CF card?? (on the mpc or on the computer? also, how many partitions?)

P3tr, yeah man I dunno. For elfer's and my sake, hopefully the mpc would recognise it as a single 2gb partition.

I did the partitions with Mac OsX.
First I did 2 partitions and the mpc was continuing without recognizing her.
Then I did 4 partitions and the mpc if that was recognizing the card but only one of the partitions of something less of 500mg.

Hola.
I have bought today a Sandisk of 1gb and it works perfectly. No problem to format from the MPC.
What I will do is to change her(it) into the shop because it is too much money and I will buy one in ebay that are for less of the half of price that in my city.
Thank you very much to all.

Goodluck!

I'm going to buy a 1GB CF card today as well. 'Cause the chances are, I'll get the same error that you did when I try to format my card on the MPC. Still, I'll try, and once/if that doesn't work, I'll try some other things and let you know if I can get it working for me.

If worst comes to worst, at least I'll have a new portable 2GB storage device.

Good news! The XL can handle 2GB cards, and therefore 2GB partitions under OSv. 1.20.

Elfer_, I'm not sure how our situations differ, but when I formatted my card on the MPC, it was fine. Not a problem at all.

FYI: I did some testing to be sure it was ALL good.... Everything was 100% compatible/interchangeable between the MPC and my PC.

This is good news for XL owners!
