Third Party OS

People are going crazy in the 1000 forums over a third party OS the 1000 is getting from some guy in Japan with new features and bug fixes. Maybe we should contact this guy?

I don't own a MPC4000 (yet). But with all of the OS problems that the 4k already has i wouldn't risk getting an OS from somewhere other than Akai... Thats just my opinion.... But some might be desperate enough to get updates from anywhere.. lol....

This would be amazing, Id definately pay for a better OS than we have. I doubt AKAI is coming with a new version.

Maybe we should team this guy up with Dave that worked at akai and quit and then came here asking for interest in a third party os cause he could do it.[/i]

I'd pay for a human-friendly 4k OS - there must be sooo much potential under that hood

Even with the SDK, I would think you would still need the original source code to be able to really understand what is going on, otherwise you can only reverse engineer into assembly code. I wonder if that guy doing the 1k OS managed to get it somehow or if he is just doing things the hard way.

I always wanted to do that with my 2k, even tried modifying the binary (but doesn't work because of the checksum). I'd be all about working on it if I could get my hands on the code. I think the reason why no company would do this is that they are afraid someone could potentially make an older product better than one of their current products for sale. Also they don't want to have to deal with supporting something they didn't engineer.

Also a bunch of users hacking their hardware = a lot of broken machines.

However, all these machines are BEGGING for open source software. I think what Akai would be affraid of is other companies stealing their software, or maybe someone hacking together a 4000 out of an old 486 and some christmas cards.

BTW, niether Sean nor Dave quit, the new owner of AKAI wanted no one from the old AKAI. Which brings this question. Is the person developing the 3rd party OS for the 1000 a former AKAI OS developer?

What, you think no one would care to get the AKAI sequencer code? That's naive.

If they were to do this and sell the OS, they would most likely be in for a lawsuit. Usually you sign a contract as a developer that all code you develop for the company is their property, which is now the property of the new Akai when they bought it. There might be sneaky ways to work around that though and hide it.
