MPC does not do grid recording like the command stations. In fact, I think the command stations have a better sequencer in terms of usage (quick erase buttons, better note repeat)...the MPC doesn't offer much in terms of editing the same way you'd play (ie-grid), but instead has the old style text list of the sequence, which gives you acces to everything. It would be nice if it used it's display for a piano roll editor or somethin'.
But really, the big difference between the two is whether you want more basic sampling with basic filters (MPC), or individual sounds that you can tweak like mad (command station). Also, even tho the command station has aftertouch, the mpc pads play better as drums.
I've have an xl-7, but needed more of my own sampled drums which is why I moved to the MPC. To me it was the sounds that differentiate those machines more than the sequencers...(I tend to record on the box, then do all the real editing & tweaking on the PC, then transfer back to the box for play...though the MPC isn't very good for this...you can't play multitimbral (yet?) over midi, only via the internal seq!)

I'm pretty blown away that they didn't include the grid, since it's so well implemented onthe mpc4k. Almost seems like they're going to add it later, since there's an obvious hole for it... but I dunno...

I agree with JK. It's the sound. I have XL-7 too and really like it. They are two totally different animals. Although the Sequencer on the MPC still has that magic touch. But the XL is dope for Grid and the really quick access to tweak sounds. I haven't had a chance to use both together yet...but soon. The plan is to use MPC1000, XL-7 and Access Virus Indigo for the live set.
