Can the MPC1000 not load .SND files??

Hey everyone

Please excuse me if this topic has been covered, but I didn't find it in my search.

My MPC 1000 arrived today and I set right to loading in some programs from my 2000XL. Everything went fine saving the samples onto a PC-formatted 100MB zip drive on the MPC, saving those on my Mac (running OS 10.2.3), then loading them onto the MPC1000 Flash Memory Card.

The problem is that none of the sound files translated from the 2000XL to the 1000! The PGM and MID files came through, you can tell by the little graphic next to the file. But none of the sound files have the "sound file graphic" next to it, and when I loaded the PGM file, none of the sound files were found.

So my question is: **can the MPC1000 not read .SND files??**

If so, this is absolutely crazy! .SND is this totally esoteric file format that just happened to be the only way that the 2000XL could save its samples, and you're telling me that the new update in the MPC series can't even LOAD them? How am I supposed to transfer all of my programs on the MPC2000XL to the MPC1000? I don't think you can even save SND files as WAVs on the MPC2000XL and my mac does not read the SND files.

Has anyone else sorted this problem out? I'd love to hear it!

you should of search but no, it cant read .snd files.

this is the next generation of the MPC series, and it can't even read the very odd and annoyingly proprietary format of its immediate predecessor?

snd can be converted to .wav via sofware like logic.

also, one should look b4 buying...

its like buying a car...and then say 'but i can't drive...erm...why doesn't this thing drive for me'.

as for the past ancestors of the mpc...well its just like a said it...its the past...and therefore the mpc 1000 leaves the past formats behind too.

like tapes to cd's.

i can definitely see the point of it being weird to not include snd compatibility

but personally, of the 65,000-70,000 samples i have in my library, NOT A SINGLE SAMPLE is in .snd format

im not trying to be a jerk, it's just the truth.

when you go in and save a program you can save the whole program in wav just turn the knob the wav function before saving.

There is where you went wrong. If you have an XL, it is a non-issue since the XL can save it's programs with the snd files in WAV format. The MPC1000 can import these re-saved programs with ease. If you do not have an XL, then there is free software that will convert your SND files to WAV. The MPC1000 can read MPC2000 pgm files in which the SND files have been converted to WAV.

Akai made it painfully clear in the in specs that the MPC1000 will not read SND files, so no secret big secret there.

I have a 2kxl and I use SND and WAV's, I NEVER have problems with either one.. Your statement has no ooomph to it homie.. Try again..

Thanks for all the responses, especially the helpful ones. I definitely appreciate it.

I've had a 2000XL for about four years now, but I've never heard of saving a .PGM with all .WAVs and can't figure out how to do it. Obviously, that would solve my problem. Could somebody walk me through that? I'm running OS 1.14, maybe it's from a later revision?

Also, what are the free programs (I'm on a Mac, OS X 10.2.3 and OS 9.2.2) you mentioned for converting .SNDs to .WAV? Cubase SX won't recognize .SND files at all.

OK, nevermind about the SAVE as .WAV function in the XL, I found that. I would still be curious about free/shareware Mac programs that convert between .SND and .WAV, however.

Damm, you beat me to your own answer cuz I was just about to post up and help you out..

Don't forget that it is a <1000 USD machine. You are not going to get everything in it. The `new buyer` market, which happens to be significantly bigger than the `existing buyer` market could not care less if it read SND directly.

I was just thinking this exact same thing. You can't have everything. It's a VERY cheap MPC compared to the other models and so it's natural in order to keep cost down that some functions will GO AWAY. Maybe they are your favorite options and maybe not.
