Trying To MIDI Up ASR And 2000xl Please Help!

Hello all,

I'll try to make this short and to the point. I've been using the MPC2000xl and an ASR10 for about a year and I feel like I have a pretty good grasp on both machines independently and now I am wanting to MIDI them up and use them together. I want to be able to play the ASR keys and have those sounds/samples recorded into the MPC sequencer. I know MIDI is not audio and the that the actual sounds won't be recorded into the MPC. Before you scold me, I have read the MIDI sections in both machines manuals and have searched the forums. I think I'm on the right track but I am getting nothing. Here is where I'm at so far:

MPC
1. MIDI cable out of MP into IN of ASR and vice versa
2. On SYNC page of MPC SYNC IN and OUT modes are set to MIDI CLOCK and the Receive and Send MMC are on.
3. The TRACK section on the Sequencer page is set to MIDI 1A-Device01

ASR
4. On the ASR, the MIDI Base Channel is 1 (corresponding to MPC MIDI track 1 right?)
5. MIDI IN MODE is set to POLY
6. TRANSMIT ON=INstrument Channel

Someone please tell me what I am doing wrong. I hate asking for a hand holding but I am at the end of my rope. I'm starting to think maybe my cables are bad. I've probably got everything set up all wrong and am going to get clowned but at this point I don't care. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

ASR10, each instrument gets a midi number 1-8.

ASR10, transmit on instrument channel, not base.
(your #4 and #6 lines are conflicting with each other)

ASR10, external sync.

MPC, track 1 on mpc MIDI 1A-Device01 will be ASR10 track 1.
MPC, track 2 on mpc MIDI 1A-Device02 will be ASR10 track 2.
MPC, track 3 on mpc MIDI 1A-Device03 will be ASR10 track 3.

etc.

It was my cables! Hooked up new ones today and was up and running in five minutes. Damn, I've been up the past two nights pouring over manuals, searching the net. I feel pretty stupid . Thanks for the assistance Lampdog, much appreciated.

Dang, cables, that sucks, well at least all is well now.

It really is, there's MUCH to be done with that combo.

You know about transwaves?
Sampling your own output internally?

ASR10 line ins can be used as a pseudo mixer for the mpc.
Then ASR main outs go to monitors/mixer wherever cause it will carry the mpc audio also, that way you end up using only 1 set of rca cables and the mpc and asr audio is mixed together in the asr10 output. You can apply ASR effects to mpc audio if you like.

Yeah, I'm learning something new every time I sit down to it. The resampling feature is really nice. Endless possibilities for tweaking. I started out on an ASRX Pro. The ASR10 is a huge improvement on the X Pro. I especially love that you can sample while the sequencer is playing. I remember being really bummed when I finally got my MP and found out you could'nt sample while the sequencer was going. I was really dependent on this feature with the X Pro for recording scratches and other instruments. All I had was that machine. So when I got my MP I was pissed to find out that what seemed like such an obvious feature was not possible. There are just so many amazing features on the ASR10 like the 2 audio tracks. that is just brilliant to be able to moniter external audio through the effects. I was'nt even looking for an ASR10. I was using the X Pro at the time and I came across the 10 at guitar center for $400. They had the 10 and an ASR88. The 10 did'nt have SCSI so I asked the sales guy if they could take the SCSI out of the 88 and put it in the 10. I thought no way in hell would they work with me like that, but they actually had an ex Ensoniq tech working in their repair department and he swapped it out in like 15 minutes. I thought I was dreaming. Service like that at Guitar Center! Anyway, I got the ASR10 in mint condition, two sample libraries on CD rom and an Ensoniq ROM drive for $400 and change. It's like it was meant to be. That's kind of how all my gear is and is also my best advice to any one starting out. Just be patient. take your time and look around everywhere for the gear you want. Good deals are all around you. Don't compromise. Get what you want from go. I've wasted a lot of dough on gear that I purchased because I could'nt afford xyz at the time. Save your $, do your homework and get what you want. You'll be glad you did. I'm done rambling now, thank you.

I felt the EXACT same way when I first got my 2kxl. WTF was gonig through my head for hours.

Cats don't realize that though, newbies run out and get stuff just based on things they see and hear. Not what they actually did homework on and found out for themselves.[/b]
