Sampling Techniques

Maybe you know this maybe you don't

I usually sample stuff out of my sound modules, keyboards and audio instruments - getting fed up with the CF thing I figured out a way to by pass the CF dialogue between my MPC and the computer.

Since the MPC1000 will let you play seq's and samples while in "rec sample" mode I've routed a sub out from my mixer to the MPC1000 rec in L or R - turned the monitor off (or listen through your headphones) to avoid feedback and hit record. I either play the seq or hit the pad and viola -

BTW I'm just talking about recording your external equipment - if you want to record what's in the mpc just change your record source to MAIN OUT

I'm just now figuring this out but if you could use the tip -there you go!

And for anybody worried about the No Timestretch issue - just play the record to the beat of your beat - boom, beats matched, hit record!

In order to capture my external gear, I do several steps
1.) play sequence that hits each pad, triggering external instrument over MIDI
2.) record whole sequence as 1 audio file into WaveLab
3.) use wavelab to autodetect the beginning & end of each sample, then save each sound to a seperate file (ie-auto trim)
for step 3, I've got a text file listing all names of the samples, and wavelab saves each sound with a name from the list. this is all done with 3 clicks of the mouse.
4.) move all these sounds to the MPC in 1 folder
5.) load all samples from that 1 folder
6.) I have an MPC program that is already set to assign those samples to the appropriate pad
7.) save as a new program, including samples, and rename to fit. this makes for a quick load later on.

Done.

Seems like a pain, but I can create a drumset on my DMPro, or nord, and play with it in the studio. The same file names & steps work for any patch or gear I want to capture in the MPC, so after I did this once, it was easy each time afterward.

So, now I can dick around in the studio and synthesize my sounds, and capture all of them into the MPC for the road in 3 minutes. No sample editing, no wasted time. So on the road, I bring 1/8th of the gear I used to. And since step #3 names the sample set the same for each piece of ext. gear, when I load in a new kit, they automatically replace the old set that was in the MPCs RAM. No purge or wasted time. I'm good to go.

I actually used to do something similiar with my ASR10 a while back. That is one reason why I hate my classic Triton. It doesn't do this, same with my 2kxl..
