Third Party OS

From a legal point of view you might be rigbt, but Numark would have to have rocks in their head to sue someone who puts out software for the MPC. They sell the hardware and give the software (updates) away for free.

If they were to do this and sell the OS, they would most likely be in for a lawsuit. I know some of the alternate OS' for the 1000 don't even do the same thing as the 1000. It opens up the hardware to do completely different things....

Is owenb referring to the Linn 9000 or whatever it was called. The product that Roger Linn designed but could not get to work, the porduct that was plagued with numerous OS bugs?

And how many products has Roger Linn designed in recent years that have been huge sellers? Seriuosly, I want to know.

I said "I believe that V1.71 is the last free update", not "I know that" nor "officially".... this is my opinion, nothing more.

And also, I was talking about NEW features, not bug fixes.

As I mentioned, I'm not working for Akai Pro anymore, so I don't know for sure what they're up to.
If there are some serious bugs in V1.71, then they'll most likely be working on it and a bug fix update would be free.

That said, my MPC4000 is working fine and I won't get rid of it at any cost!

Regarding my question about paying for new features, again, this is an idea, not something that is already decided.
It's just that there are some features that I think would be useful.

So, hold your horses!

Don't know about your experience with the Linn 9000 but at the time there was nothing that could touch the Linn 9000. I used it extensively in the 80's with no problems and then switched to Roger Linns MPC 60. His updates for that machine continue to work flawlessly. How many pieces of tech gear from the 80's remain in use today? As for new products, I'm not aware of any but Linn is a guitarist primarily and there haven't been any major changes to guitars in 60 years.....Roger Linn is undoubtedly the grandfather of the drum machine. His departure from AKAI was thier loss.....

adrian your putting a good case together,may be sean & another former AKAIN (new word to desribe an akai employee pronounced AKAI-AN) are working on a new o.s. themselves? why would sean ask such a question,then we started saying yeah we would pay $75-100 for it,now if he could come with the feature's we asked fo' and it's not riddled with bugz then yeah I would buy into that.still hope remains....where's feline?

Linn 9000 huh? Its not like there were many of those made. Many of the people in these forums were infants. That expensive piece of gear was not a huge sucess in terms of sales. The MPC 60 (and Emu SP 12) were the machines I remember being the items people were desperately trying to get their hands on. But Roland drum machines were among the most popular instruments for electronic producers.

Did someone mention that the head of Numark got rid of all previous Akai employee?

Akai should have no problem with a 3rd party os. as mentioned they give you the os for free. if anything it will cause more sales of the 4000, they cant have a problem with that.

Pretty sure they sold all the 4000's there were to sell. No more money in it for them...
