Software bit reduction is only going to sound so good regardless of whether its an effect or actually a 12bit sample. That being said you should be able to just zero out the last 4 bits of a 16bit sample to get the effect. Either that or just sample your sound 24db below 0 on the mpc and then normalize. Thats basically the same as only using 12 bits since each bit is 6db.

All this is why I still keep my old samplers around :)

i quite agree with you that you need the actual converters to get the true sound.

didn't think of the knock 4 bits off trick, but even so nomalizing is going to lose any 12bittedness the sample has anyway, so i wouldn't worry about it. having said that, if you master to 16 bit, it's going to be mucked up whatever, so i guess you are right. i think too much sometimes. grrr back to topic.....

Normalizing wont lose the 12 bits. Altho you will techincally have all 16 bits being used the actual resolution of the sample will still be equivilent to 12 bits of data, its just louder. Normalize doesnt increase resolution it just adds gain to whats already there. You can only downgrade bit/sampling of a recorded piece you cant increase. Its like zooming in on a digital image. You can make it bigger but you dont get any sharper resolution doing it.

man it will be cool if JJ adds recordable track mutes, its such a nice way to sketch a "rough" skeleton arrangement quickly, really nice work flow,

In the track mutes screen there is F1-F5 free (don't know what the point of the solo function on F6 is but mine does not do anything and it not needed there anyway) but to
but i think it will be nice i mean he could reserve a sequence or 2 higher up for the recorded tracks mute sequence or something, and also maybe to have the jog wheel control time so it can reverse the sequence while recording because you don't want to have to constantly set loop points for different sections if the sequence, this way if you don't like the bar you recorded you just swing the data wheel to rewind 3 bars to re record the mute section.

the track mute 'solo' function should reverse the function of each onscreen 'pad' so if you go into 'solo mode' and hit pad 1 then only that track should play. it's there so instead of hitting pads 2-16 to hear pad 1 on it's own, you only have to hit F6 and then pad 1. i can't confirm whether it's working or not, as i don't have an mpc.

this function does not work (on mpc anyway) but i really don't need it to work either i prefer JJ to use that for something else regarding recordable track mutes

personally i think it's a good thing to have. say you were doing a live set, or, if track mutes/solos were recordable, you were recording a song, and you got to a point where you had bass, strings, vocals samples and drums spread across 16 pads all at once, and you wanted a breakdown with just one vocal sample playing, without the track solo option, you'd need to hit all the pads except the one you wanted left at the same time. this is very hard to do unless you have 8 fingers per hand. with the track solo option, you'd only need to hit f6 (to turn the solo mode on) and then the pad with the vocal sample on that you wanted left. quite frankly, it would be so simple, you could do that with your penis.

don't know mate, you'd have to download the manuals of the other mpcs to find out, unless you fancy asking people in the respective forums.

Using Beta 16. I think I've found a workaround to the issues I was having with loading/saving projects to my 2G CP card. This might be of use to other cats out there. Basically I had a corrupted sample in my project which also affected my "ALL" file for the project. Firstly I backed up all my files to a hardrive, then defragged the compact flash card. At the end of the defrag the analysis told me one sample and the "ALL" file could not be defragged. What I did then was to go back to my programs and deleted the evil  sample and the "ALL" file. I already had another "ALL" file saved w/o the offending sample so luckily do not lose to much data. This seemd to do the trick.
I think now, (I know a lot of you do this ) it's also a good idea to save entire memory to a new project folder, and not to overwrite an existing folder. Did this last night , 4-5 times, each time saving entire memory to new folder, turned machine off, then loaded project. Each time I had smooth operation. Happy again in music!

yeah, you need to hold down the solo button untill you have pressed a pad, then you can let go. now pressing a different pad will change the solo to that pad/track, holding shift and pressing other pads adds/removes them to the solo. pressing solo again will return to how it was b4 you started.

it's a good feature, i sometimes use it to track out my beats quickly if i'm in a rush.
