Exchange tips and tricks for the Akai MPC4000

I'd like to see the 5000 have 48 channels of outs via firewire. That would seal the deal for me.

Nobody ever confirmed that was an actual product. I would believe it could have been a prototype as it would have been the next logical step after the Z sampler. But we all know they dropped their dedicated sampler line. In fact, they never quite finished the OS on the Z (and now we are waiting to see if the same happens with the 4k).

I agree it to be pointless to have a 192k sampler, but if the sales were still there they would have done it just to have it on paper and people would buy it just to say they had that feature. Just like how people buy cheap audio interfaces that are capable of 192k but have shitty converters. As pointed out before, I honestly dont think any drum based MPCs should ever need 24/96.

But I honestly still don't see the point complaining about 1k and 2500 features in a thread and forum about the 4k. Always will be 2 different beasts.

Found it, thanks.

Well, i guess that's what to base an MPC 5000 on, but 192 is really extreme sample rate, even 96 is fast for most people, most folks seem to have stuck at 44.1 at 24 bit!

Well. the funny thing, is the they left the same RAM limitations, so your stuck with 512M but using 24bit/192khz sample rate, which just eats up memory.

Since the MPC 2500 is the newest model (my guess is that the 1000 was actually just a beta for the 2500 in the first place), Akai could just drop the 1000. New users would have to spend the extra money for the 2500 if they wanted an MPC. It's not naive to think what Akai will do next. We can only speculate. My guess is they will drop the 1000, keep the 2000XL until the OS on the 2500 is solid, and drop the 4000 in favor of an MPC 5000....

Interesting thought, I'm not sure if they'll drop the 1000 (those seem to be selling quite qell) and we agree on the other points. It would be nice if they 'wait' with dropping the 2000xl from their portfolio before they move on completely to the 2500 but I wouldn't count on it. Especially with Akai now not really being Akai anymore.

If there is a 5000 on the way the 4000 is out indeed....even if there isn't I'm not too sure about that machines future.

Well, offer your services up to Akai/Numark. My guess is that they will pass.
No thanks, I'm really happy with the business I work in right now. Apart from the fact that I live in an entirely different continent.

What MPC do you use again??

At the moment: none. I'm actually (still) in the market for a new one. I actually am looking at the 2500 and the 4000, since I do care about sample mangling and synthesis.

I made more money off of Akai then they could ever make from me. Akai put out a product that I wanted, and I bought it. Do I have to repeat that I don't care what their marketing plan is? How does that effect me?
I doesn't. But than again, the world doesn't revolve around you or me. Akai's world certainly doesn't.

I have the MPC I want. Too bad many forum members don't. [...] As far as my education, I am constantly striving to improve myself. [...] My experience allows me to run the daily operations of a business that produces $4 million in medical care each year. But honestly, that means nothing here. My experience allowed me to sale more MPCs than anyone in eBay's history.
Good for you. It seems you not me should be applying for a job at Akai.

From my perspective, I think Akai is doing the right thing with what they are doing with the 2500 and 1000. I would give the 1000 every possible function of the 2500. It will have no impact on the sales of the 2500.
Didn't you say that they should drop the 1000?

Anyway, the main point is the 4000 (of this thread) if there is a 5000 on the way, bye bye 4000.

Ah, I miss the days of hardware sampling....pushing buttons and watching lights blinking in your 19" rack.

I'm not sure if I agee with you on that, drums sampled at 24/96 do sound clearer and by definition are more dynamic to me. This makes no sense if you consider the fact that we're not supposed to hear these frequencies, but still...we do. Of course, with a lot of music being compressed 'flat', dynamics isn't a major thing to a lot of people.

Of course nobody on the dance floor cares about wether the music they hear is from a 12 bit or a 16 bit or a 24 bit machine)...

But I honestly still don't see the point complaining about 1k and 2500 features in a thread and forum about the 4k.
If you're talking about me: I wasn't complaining about them, I was giving my opinion on the product portfolio (which includes these machines) and what I think we can expect from Akai.

Akai not being Akai anymore?? The most important/vital operations are still in Asia...as it has always been from my knowledge

Man, you seem to know quite a bit about how many MPCs are being sold. Sounds like you have stock in the company. Care to back up your statements with facts ???

It would be nice for them to 'wait' before the drop the 2000XL before they completely go with the XL? Why would it be nice? Does it effect you in any way?

You seem to have all this knowledge about Akai and MPCs and don't actually own one ??? Have you actually used one? I don't believe Akai's worl revolves around you if that is what you are implying.

As far as my job, I am quite happy doing what I do. And spending my hard earned money on all the little toys my heart desires.

I did say/imply that they should drop the 1000..or after they suck up every dime..release another 1000 with an adjustable screen (like what they did with the 2000/2000XL).

Well..the point on this thread...yes, another MPC is coming. I don't have a inside scoop. I only assume because if they are still in business to make money, its about time to drop an MPC from their official line up and add another.

MPC is a hardware sampler

When I say "drum based" I am referring to the 1000 and 2500. I can bet that 5% of their users are actually sampling their own drums. Look around on the board and all anybody wants is to chop up loops or download someone's samples. A lot are relying on mp3 originated samples, YUK! 24bit is much more valuble than 96k especially if you are doing processing, but as most people with 1k and 2500 say, they are not doing sound processing, just playing back chopped loops or existing kits. You can do extra processing in your DAW.

If you're talking about me: I wasn't complaining about them, I was giving my opinion on the product portfolio (which includes these machines) and what I think we can expect from Akai.

I was just saying how the thread moved that way in general. It is interesting to watch the products to guess what they will do next though.

I personally could care less where the non Z-based MPCs go. The non-4k MPCs are still the same basic machine which has basically kept up with current computer technology (more ram, different media, etc) but barely offer few new sound capabilities. Otherwise the 2500 is the same concept as the 60. 4k changed everything and brought it to a new level, so it would be sad to see them drop the best sequencer/sampler combo of all time.

I still see no point in a new hardware version of the 4k when they still have not optimized it to its full potential. If they can't finish this one, how will they finish the next? Maybe because they have a new team of programmers? I don't see them changing much on the hardware end other than a USB2 connection and a color screen, both which do nothing for the machine. We already know they aren't making new samplers with new features. And you will not see something like a firewire connection for audio (too bad mlan never took off).

Which is really very sad, as the MV-8000 will be getting that very same thing this month (not natively but via R-Bus), but then again with Akai, the DPS 24 ACTUALLY indicated that a Firewire card would be a future option and you can guess what they are still waiting for ;)

But yes, if they were smart they would use a Firewire interface on the next MPC to not only provide Audio In/Out, but also control ala Ak.Sys & Media Management (HD/Card, etc...)

Shouldn't be too hard for them. Just have the Akai guys tap the Alesis guys (who just released 2 new Firewire interfaces) on the shoulder and say ... share some code please..

It was called Boris.....sorta.... :)

BOT, I think Akai makes another Flagship MPC, with a full spec Sampler.

The consumers of the higher profit, entry-level products, in any market, always need a flagship to compare/aspire to...

Yes I agree it would be nice, but not sure why you say "Shouldn't be too hard for them." You are referring to the same company that can't finish the OS on your machine.

The thing you have to realize is that no MPC has ever had streaming digital I/O over something like USB or firewire. I'm not even sure that the DPS does this. The USB on akai.sys is not streaming audio and was only designed for control and file transfer. They have digital outs (spdif and adat), but that is a standard that any other device with compatible ports can work with. With firewire or USB, they have to come up with speciallized software and drivers that work on the machine and the PC and is not easy when there are 1000 audio apps out there to be compatible with. Sure it would be cool, but I'd be happy with a few adat outs standard which they already have the code for.

There is a point where if the integration gets too far, there is really no point in having the MPC at all, might as well just get a pad controller for your computer and do midi there. I believe the MPC should continue as a stand alone machine, so moving forward would be to give the MPC more computer like features rather than more computer integration. One thing they could easily already do that people would love (and the mv-8000 has) is all multitrack recording. The old s5-6000 samplers could sample to and from disk, and they never implemented it on the Z. Disks are even faster today, so its a shame this didn't get implemented.
