Have any of you guys/gals encountered 'Arranging sound memory...please wait' after sampling a sound source?

I get this message today after sampling via the digital input. The MPC 3000 just freezes up after this. The only solution is to turn it off and back on again....

..in fact, the problem may just be the digital input. When I have a digital source connected, I can see the sound signal register in the meter display but can not hear it. Recording/sampling via analog inputs work just fine.

When the sampling process has completed then this message can/will/does appear ... in particular when other samples are already loaded into memory.

The message is to let you know that the memory defragging and compacting routines are running.

The message or a variant of it appears also on entering the sample recording screen when other samples are already loaded in memory.

A MPC3000 fitted with an OS less than 3.16 will have problems managing the memory when 32 meg of sample RAM is present and similar messages will appear at other phases of the sampling process too. ( ending in total corruption of the sample memory )

The messages are not related to the digital input in anyway at all.

Again ... the message is nothing to do with the digital input.

A problem related to the digital input on your machine may however be causing a running process to never end ... hence the prolonged nature of the "arranging sound memory" message.

Remember for the MPC3000 digital input.

SPDIF, 44.1kHZ, 16bit, Stereo Interleaved, Connected via a 75 Ohm SPDIF cable, sample clock being sent from the master device connected to the MPC3000.

Rohan,

Thanks for the reply.

It does appear that the MPC 3000s has problems with the digital input (whether or not this is related to the prolonged 'arranging sound memory' issues). I am using the same Denon CD player with digital out, that I have been using with my previous MPCs for years. I am using a quality digital cable..and even tried lower quality cables just to make sure that I am doing everything to trouble shoot my problems. I am only trying to sample a sound that is 2 seconds long with no other samples in memory.

This MPC 3000 does have the 3.11 OS installed as well as 32 MB. This is pretty much what I have been using for years without any of the problems I am having today.

I will probably shipped it off to VST this week.

No problem Jahrome ...

Could be possible and indeed if the SPDIF tranceiver ( which only runs in recieve mode as far as the outside world is concerned ) is failing ... Such failure would possibly hold up other parts of the circuit ...

Well lets hope the Denon is still in good order then ? :-)

Does tend to point at a problem with "this" particular MPC3000.

A couple of free of charge tricks to try...

Just to isolate the problem Jahrome.

If your MPC3000 has a floppy drive present then boot the 3.16 OS and try the sampling process. What is the result when you try this ?

Swap the RAM chips around. What is the result when you try this ?

All I can think of right now.

Jahrome,
I would take the 2500 to a friends house for a few days and then try the 3k while it's gone.
Just sounds too much like a typical horror flick where the 2500 is jealous of the 3k and trying to systematically destroy it.

Seriously though, I would try using the digital out on the Motif just to see if that makes a difference.
I know you are familiar with the 3k, but what you are describing is not the norm.
You should be able to see the digital as well as monitor it and it should move right along just as the analog sampling does.

Also, what made you get another 3k?
Were you missing something or jusat came across a deal?
I know you have said you always liked the 3k, but the 2500 offered you the things you were missing in the 3k.

There was really no thought process involved with picking up the 3000. I have always had at least two MPCs so why not just pick up my long time favorite....

I am very familar with the 3000...the MPC registers a digital signal being input into it, but there is no sound. Analog works just fine. CD players are 44.1khz/16 bit so it should work just fine with the MPC 3000 I currently have, as it did in the past. I will try the digital outs of my sound modules just to say that I tried everything to trouble shoot this problem. Then I will just send it off to VST or Forat. I am leaning more towards Forat so they can customize it at the same time.

Well, it was short lived. Instead of getting it fixed, I am returning it to the person I purchased it from. I will spend time looking for one that actually works. I really wanted to keep this unit because it is in pretty good shape.
