Hi, Just got my machine.

When hooking up my MPC to my Vintage keys module and using channel 1 on the module, there are 127 instruments/patches choose from. How do you make the MPC command the Vintage keys to jump to any one of those 127 patches? Hopefully I'm being daft, as I'd have thought this was a fundemental requirement when using the MPC as a master midi sequencer.

Using the MPC with a bassstation, vint keys and master keyboard, everything else plays/records just fine. Just dosnt seem to have the menu item on the MPC to do this. I looked in the manual. Can't see a way of doing it. So, I have to dial in the paches I want by hand on the individual sound modules. Not great for live work. Please help.

Yes, this seems to be a key item I miss from my 2000xl as well. Having that program change item right on your track info screen. You can manually insert a change into your sequence to get the mpc to "pull up" your sound.

Mode +Step Edit

Insert

change item to "Program Change" press Do It

the number on the right side of the screen is the patch number that will be selected on the module you are running on that midi channel for the track.

AH!! Thanks so much! I was beginning to get that pissed off feeling, as it's about the only thing I could see wrong with it. Not too bothered about no menu item as such, but at least it can be controlled somehow. I'll try that tonight. Cheers! :D

it sounds like you have a nice setup. im sort of using a vintage keys too, it's a proteus 1000 (crappy!) with a vintage pro ROM in it (not crappy)

anyway, if youre setting up a patch change that is going to another bank besides 0, you need to insert control changes into your track. these are like program changes, but they choose the bank instead of the program.

but re-reading your question, it seems the vintage keys only has one bank?? well, if you need help setting that up, PM me and i'll help you out with it. it's only complicated at first.

No. the Vint Keys has 16 channels each channel with it's own set of 127 vintage moogs, ARPs, Hmmndds, Claves, PPGs etc, etc. lovely. Used to use it fine via software sequencer, but got the MPC for live stuff, so wanted to skip about the patches using the MPC to do this. Seems from the first reply I'll prob be able to program the patch changes in ok. I'll let you know if I run into any bother.

Cheers. :)

Hey Tiger. I have a KorgKarma and i want to know how to change between banks, I alredy know how to change the programs, but I don't know how to make the MPC to trigger a bank change. Any Idea?

The way I choose the bank is on the main window underneath the MUTE:OFF

It will have the midi bank? 1A, 2A, 3A etc, think these are your banks.

Nah..those are the MIDI channels/Port out of the MPC...ie 1A = Channel 1, Port "A", 14B - channel 14, port "B"... "Banks" are ways for MIDI to get around the "127" program limit on any given channel...using CC#00 & CC#32, you can select a bank, *then* the program. So you could have 1 bank of all synths, the Prog Change to get "moog1" from inside that, then another bank of drums, and prog chnge to get "bass drum 1" from that...

yeah, it's pretty easy. my explaination is really long, but dont be scared, im just a blabbermouth. the trickiest thing is finding out what bank your sound is on, in sysex #'s. it probably sez in the karma manual so check there first.

once you have that, here's what you do in the mpc (it takes a minute the first time, until you get used to the process).

on the track you want to insert the program change on, go into step edit.

hit insert, then use the wheel to choose "control change". hit "do it."

on a lot of midi gear the bank change actually requires 2 of these bank change commands. you just entered he first if you're following this at your mpc.

use the arrows to get to the last zero all the way to the right in the event. so it will say "CC: 0-BANK MSB (space space space space): 0"

that last zero is the one youre editing here. enter the MSB # you got from the korg manual.

to enter the 2nd bank change that you (probably) need, hit insert again (you might want to insert it 10 ticks or so away from the other one, maybe not). choose "control change" again.

this time change the "CC:" to 32. it'll say BANK LSB (dont worry about what MSB and LSB mean for now). change that zero all the way on the right to whatever LSB # you got from the karma manual.

and finally, insert a program change that corresponds to the patch # that you want to call up in the bank.

that's all.

if you're on an emu module you'll need to add 1 to whatever it says is the patch # when entering your program change. cuz the emu stuff starts at 0 :) im sure other companies do it like that too.

i never knew what to do with system exclusive messages until i started using my mpc a month ago or so. i knew about it but never really understood anything.

there's all kinds of cool sh1t you can do with it. like you can store individual patches out of your synth right onto your sequencer track. on my juno106 i never worry about storing things on the synth anymore. i just put the patch info (like filter, reso, adsr, etc) into the midi track on my sequencer. next time i turn everything on and hit play, the juno goes back to how i left it.

i know this crap is way totally geeky but when you do music all day, every day, it comes in handy

reply if something wasnt clear

Done all that stuff...and it work's!! Your'e right about adding 1. Pity you can't see the patches on the sound mod scroll back and forth in real time when you turn the data wheel on the MPC. However it jumps to the correct patch on playback. Nice.

"when you do music all day, every day, it comes in handy "

Ahh...if only I could do that....

One other thing you can do is take the midi out of your synth module to the midi in of the MPC. Midi out of the MPC to the midi in of the synth also.
After you have picked what patch you like, save it to a user preset on your synth say A85.
Then move up one patch on your synth to A86.
Go into step edit, and move back down to A85 - this will insert the program change/bank change midi message out of your synth into the MPC. Every time you hit play on the MPC, it will spit this info into your synth and you will be back on the sound you like....

yeah, that's how it works on the juno 106

oh, i think that is what yer saying :)

Caution: if your noticing your sound module hickup during looped seqs that have a bank/prog change, then you need to pull the prog change out into a seperate sequence, and run that once before looping your sequence.

Some sound modules obey the bank/prog change to reload the program even if that program is already loaded (ie- if you wanted to undo changes to CC#s that were made, etc). 2000xl had a feature that you can set the program change on the main page, so it was done only once the first time you started the sequence. In the case described so far, every time you loop your sequence, your re-sending the program change to the external device...

By tiger vomitt Wed Feb 11, 2004 9:09 pm
yeah, to keep my explaination as simple as possible i didnt say that i usually put the bank and prog changes on a seperate, accordingly named track. i keep it muted except when i first open up the sequence.

Nice note Tiger..
Many of you may remember the issue with the MPC2000 in that it resent those program change commands entered on the front screen everytime the pattern looped. They fixed that on the 2000xl to only send it the first time the sequence came up. Each time it repeated thereafter, the message was not sent. This allowed you to do filtersweeps, etc. without your sound suddenly resetting. I'm still hoping this feature gets added to the front screen in a future OS update for the 1000. It is very useful and timesaving.

Your workaround does the trick, but it's just another thing to have to add in with the mundane tasks on the step edit screen.

If they could just add this and a velocity setting for everthing on each track....
