how do u copyright ur beats with bmi do u sign up .....

do u sign up as a publisher or something else and if i start a production company how do i Register that ....just wanna make sure im doing everything right..

You copyright your material with the US govt. Forms downloadable on the net.

If you want to join BMI or ASCAP contact them directly.

If you want to start a publishing company its the same as any other company. Your local govt. will have specifics. A business liscense and regestering your name is about the most of it.

Its all pretty easy - you've just got to put forth the effort

Quick question should you wait til your turnin your beat intoa song w/ vocals and everything? Like say if you copyright your whole beat cd, but then later you go and make some songs with artists. More than likely your gonna go and rearrange/alter some things in the beat at the studio. You would have to go and recopyright the beat wouldnt you?

The main reason to copywrite a beat is to protect the main melody....As long as that doesn't change, your good!!!!

might wana try the Poor man's copywright method my dad taught me. it works. you put what you want on a cd, write a note stating what you produced and the date etc, seal it, ,and mail it to yourself with a stamp and postage on it. never open it untill your "court case" (if anyoen jacks yo shit) and the judge will open the totaly sealed package with postage+date) and u win ur case if its legit na mean?

another thing thats fun, is mailing shit for free... just put the destination adress as the "return adress" and put a bogus mailing adress with no postage, so it will get "returned" na mean? lol

THIS DOES NOT WORK....You can easily send yourself and empty envelope unsealed with posted and then put a cd in at a later date....This method would NEVER hold up in court!!!!

I personally know of a friend who went to court with his poor mans copyright and the dude who was jacking him had a posted mailer with a date on his that was one month b4 his and the dude that made the music lost the case. So protect your self and do it right from jump street

You only need to establish a publishing company if you're actually going to publish music for other artists. You don't need a publishing company to publish your own material. Your own music is covered under your songwriter's agreement. The production company needs to be established through the secretary of state. As someone said earlier, the forms are downloadable from your local government site. You need to decide which entity structure best meets your needs. It will probably be either a LLC or a corporation (INC). The worst would be a sole proprietor/dba because it provides no protection. It just basically allows you to use a business name that you have selected. Check them out though; you can get a description of the various entity structures online. I hope that helps.
