it depends on what you're trying to do really. Somebody is gonna tell you to get the 3000 because of it's vintage and its sound, filters. Other may suggest the 2K because it's relatively newer than the 3000, thus has more features.

I think you should definitely do your research first before you purchase anything. However I can tell you if you don't have a sampler, the 2KXL seems to be the best bet. If you already own a separate sampler and just looking for a sequencer, maybe go for the 60 or 3000.

What Beatz said is EXACTLY what I knew someone would say cause the same thing has been said many times before and it seems to be very correct.

I would say that a standalone sampler, especially hardware, is not really necessary.

As I have used both for quite some time, if I had to get rid of one, it would be the XL. What I would lose with the XL, mainly graphic waveform editing and better effects, I would replace with a software program, such as Recycle and MPC Editor. Though that set-up would be more expensive, it is worth it....

I will add that going with just the XL is a good move as well. I have nothing bad to say about the XL, with the exception that some of its editing features are slow as heck.

I have an S950 (actually 2, but 1 just died couple weeks ago) and I just bought an S6000 3 weeks ago for cheap. They're nice. Now I've messed around with the 2KXL a couple time at my friend's house or at GC and I do believe for sequencing, nothing beats an MPC. However, I'm starting to find the S6000 is crazy powerful. I don't own an MPC yet, I'm planning to get one. But for now, the combo of S950 and S6000 will do me just fine.

2kxl is not a full sampler like many dilusional people fiercely believe it to be.

Personally, If you have an S6000 and S950 I would go with the MPC 3000. Because ... You don't really need the waveform editing on the 2000XL as the 6000 beats the crap out of the 2000xl as far as dedicated sampler ( Because it is one of the best Samplers ever made) . If you got the 3000 you would get a bigger sound out of your drums ( assuming you know how to design sounds which I am assuming you do) The 3000 is built better, has less buttons to press (i.e. dedicated function buttons instead of using shift all of the time) , Unltimatley sounds better as it was a much more expensive machine to begin with. I own the 2000xl as well but If I could not have both I would get an MPC3000 as it is problably my favorite piece of gear. Make sure you get one with a good LCD Screen and turn the screen off when not in use. With your s950 it will kind of be like having an MPC 60 as well. The 3000 has double the MIDI outs and it sounds like you are a MIDI Module kind of guy ( Like me ) . I will Plug 3000's until the day I die as they represent sort of an end of an era as far as build quality and attention to making the best possible product rather than the most marketable one. True it may lack some features of newer MPC's but alot of those features are do-able on the 3000 they are just not as straight forward. MPC 2000XL's tend to be a bit clearer and sometimes harsher just in nature of the sampler, very crisp and you have to tone down sounds with the filter alot , I know as I do alot of live shows and a harsh snare or hihat really comes through on 5,000 watt P.A.'s . I use a 1000 live but in the studio my main baby is the 3000 and the 2000xl is for when I am just looking for that sound as it has it's own sound. I say go with a 3000 and you will never regret it.

you cant go wrong either way, but id go with 3k just for midi ports. it has 4 midi outs and 2 ins. what is your style? do you want the machine to do half the work, or you do the work and machine follows.

man, i was so hyped about getting the 3000 for the last 2 weeks and I've been watching a few auctions on eBay as well. But just as of today, my friend offered me a trade for my maxed out S6000. In return I'd get his MPC2kXL (max ram, zip drive) and S5000 (max ram, USB). I'm losing the effect board on the S6000 because his S5000 doesn't have that, plus his 2KXL doesn't have 8 outs.

i know the 3000 is a great machine, but should I just pull the trigger and trade up?

I wouldn't. mpc 2k's are droping in price so much

The fact that MPCs are droppin in price shouldn't be a factor. Whether it is in good condition, if you really need/want one..should be factors.

S6000 or 5000 are worth less than an MPC. Those samplers are worth about $300-$450.

I have seen s6000's maxed with effects boards sell for around 900.00 on a good day but if you consider an S5000 stripped sells for around 400.00 and an MPC 2000xl sells for about 800.00 you would be making around 300.00 on the deal and keeping the environment you are used to sampling in.

I picked up an S6000 for $400 and missed out on another for $450. $900 is too much for that sampler. Also, MPC 2000XLs maxed out and in good condition can go for at least $1000. The prices of these pieces of gear are also reflected in the rep of the seller. In other words, don't expect anyone pay top dollar from an eBay newbie selling used gear.....
