If the OS development is slow... make it Open Source!

You know, Im starting to think that one MPC4000 can be completely different from another MPC4000, in regards to how it responds to an OS...

I remember back when I had a MPC2000xl, me and one other guy I knew both had units that would every now and then randomly transpose the sequence during playback. We'd have to hit STOP and then Play again and usually it would be fine...Other people with the same OS never got this problem.

That said, my 4000 has never crashed on me once except once when I was auditioning a certain long wav file and I had to change the name of the file...I can't get it to crash in Song mode, or Step Edit, or Seq Edit, or just about any of the pages...I run OS 1.71 and have no problems. Are there any known steps to crash ANY MPC4000 running 1.71? I'd like to try it and see what happens..Some guy recently claimed that different 4000s have different processors in them, that might explain a few things..

I've been faced with this facts (by the Linux Audio Development mailing list) several times.

They think I am an Akai spy that wants to steal work from people by involving them in the project.

They always sa: "why don't you guy a set of $100 drum pads and start your own OS on a linux box!" and "What would you gain from such a task?"

I only end up thinking on the users. It would be ridicolous for me to develop an OS so only I could benefit.

I am not the only MPC4000 user around. There are several. Yes, I could live with the bugs, but I am a creative artist before anything else. The fact that I can't have the music exactly as I want it just because I have to think of "workarounds", it frustrates me. I wan't my MPC4000 to be able to do whatever I want it to do. Yeah, it is not logic or anything, but, as you, I don't have a better replacement for my overall stuff.

So my purposes:

- Help Akai develop a better OS for the users.
- Give the users a better, larger set of creative tools by empowering them to create them.
- Contribute to the open source community, as well as to Akai
- Learn.

With all my respect to you, illiac. Really, I do respect you a lot and I think you are the one brings things closer to reality. But my role is not the one of the realist, but the one of the dreamer that reaches to the sky and what's to create the perfect world... I am aware that we need to find some common ground, because we're never gonna be able to bring the dreams back to earth... and a mundane way of life is soooo boring and "impossible"... so, common ground is the thing, man! ;=)

I can certainly understand wanting to develop a big piece of software! It's a lot of fun on its own. At the same time it's enormously time-consuming and as you say you have to think about who your users will be, if you are going to invest so much effort. The Linux guys probably have a good gut sense for this. Also a lot of them are rather strongly anti-business, it's just a cultural thing, so they see corporate conspiracies everywhere.

I think this is still a great idea, whatever the practicalities and legalities of it. Don't let people who nay say put you off, remember most groundbreaking things are put down as imposible etc.

I can't help out programing, not sure what I can do, but i am in there!

p.s. great city Guadalajara, I was there in march (second time I have been there). I drove a car for the first time in Mexico (and first time in a left hand drive car) there to Chapala Niiiice

Guadalajara is a good city, maybe the 'nicest' in Mexico! I don't know if I could handle the weather being so perfect every day like that though, I prefer moody Scotland (well... not in Febuary I don't, it's gret here just now though).Chapala was a bit too hot for me midday though, mad dogs and Scotsmen I suppose

I haven't experenced the Ulster midges, it's possible they are similar. Get good insect repellant!

Auch fergoodnessakes, I lived the first 18 years of my life in County Down and the midges never gave me worse than a wee itch.

Well, I think that the revision of the proposal is going pretty good.

How should we get it? Anyone knows somebody in Akai that might help? Who would be the right person at Akai to read the proposal?

If anyone has any ideas, please, contribute! I think we should call and try to get the CEO or some Lead Programmer or Chief.

One way would be to crawl the internet and look for Akai's directory. Or maybe we can just call the headquarters.

I would suggest telephoning Akai and trying to find out who you should speak to. Hopefully someone helpful will answer the phone and point you in the right direction.
