effects settings

Anybody got any special effects settings that they like. If you dont care if anyone knows them, post them.

the effect i use most often is the bit grunger on 2 or 3. i like how it makes stuff all squishy

i rarely use the compressor, it sounds kinda weak IMO (im used to analog stuff or UAD plugins). i usually only turn it on if i put together a beat and see it's way too quiet when i look at my mixer's meters. so i'll turn on the compressor, not really hitting it at all, just for makeup gain. sometimes there's just too many channels in the mpc's mixer being used to adjust every single one to make up gain. i end up losing my balance between the tracks if i try. so i use the compressor's makeup gain instead. not perfect engineering-wise but whateva

the reverb is a little weird. when i use it i usually leave it pretty dark and quiet in the mix. i do like that i can send FX1 to FX2 if the reverb is FX2.

flying pan, oh yeah i use that one on every single song hmmm i just noticed how close it is spelled to "frying pan." maybe it's a japanese thing...

i hate to admit it cuz i dont like saying bad stuff about the mpc but they really should have included a delay in there. i could have lived without the chorus and flanger, but rather had a echo delay. who the hell uses flanger nowadays anyway? (well, maybe a really crazy flanger every now and then, but not the kind they put into the 1k). i havent used a chorus on anything since band practice in 1991. it was even cheesy then!

the eq is ok, sometimes. i havent used it yet on fx1 or fx2, only on the master section. i dont like how it makes stuff sound smaller. but again, im used to fancier eq's and effects in general so i guess im a snob

don't blast the chorus just yet. I'll take drums sampled in MONO (save space and voices), pan them (or frying pan them), then pass it through a mild chorus. It airs out the drums a little (especially in head phones) and simulates a real short, gated reverb, without washing them out or doing nothing like the MPC's reverb would.

If you need to emulate some delay, rather than edit the sample, you can edit the sequence (cakewalk has some great midi effects like delay). It's not real time, but it goes with the sequence, it's cheap (in memory), and (somewhat) easy to do. So rather than echo the audio, you just re-trigger the note & use up voices to overlap the audio...same thing. (only works if the pad is set to POLY).

i posted this so people can have a few effects settings that sound good. Cause some people dont get that sound they want but other people know the settings for it. you know what i mean? i just confused myself.

Any of you cats have a problem with sequences saving the effects? Everytime I load up my programs & sequences I have to set the effects to what they were before. Once I do the individual tracks I originally applied them to pick them right up. But what am I not doing that's making me have to choose the effects again everytime I load up? Help is much appreciated.

make sure youre saving the whole project - choose "save entire memory" and just plop it in a folder.

when you edit something and want to save your changes, just choose the folder and hit "save entire memory" again. actually you probably wont have to choose the folder again, it's usually there from the last time you saved.

Won't this save all of my samples a 2nd time, thus killing the memory space on the card?

no it will rewrite and delete all the duplicates

but I use alot of Reverb and tremelo on my stuff

I haven't actally gone that deep yet, but manual pg 82 has something about loading only the Effects settings from the .ALL file. So it looks like the info is saved at the Song level when you do "Save all SEQs and Songs". Then loading up the .ALL file should include the effects settings for that Song.

I never use "Save Entire Memory", you're right about it duplicating samples and wasting card space. I re-use Programs on different Songs, so I keep a clear separation between them: Programs and their samples in folders of their own, and separate folders for each Song and its Sequences.

if you mean that it doesnt re-write the files already in a directory, that is incorrect. you have a choice of whether or not the 1k will overwrite files when you save. and even if you choose do not overwrite, it still wouldnt make doubles of the files. in that case, it only saves stuff that isnt in the folder already.

if you mean instead that since youre using programs in multiple songs, and you dont want to save the programs in multiple places... that i can kinda understand. but doesnt that make life much harder than it needs to be? load the songs, search thru fodlers, load the programs, search thru fodlers, load the fx files. you could be doing that in one step instead of 6.

when i am done working on a beat for a while, i put the card in my card reader. it's always hooked up to my mac keyboard right next to me. i drag the beat into my "mpc songs" folder to back it up. after that, it doesnt readlly matter what i have on the CF card cuz it's all backed up already. now the next time i wanna work on that song, i just put it back on the card.

Do you guys make 1 or 2 long-ass 32 bar sequences a song or several 4-8 bar sequences into a song? I'm trying to figure out what's the most practical way & am curious what my comrads are doing.

every song is different. some take a bunch of 2 bar seq's some need 2 x 32 bar loops
