Forum to discuss all matters relating to the MPC1000 and MPC2500 operating systems created by 'JJ' (all versions).

The objective of this thread is to get feedback from mpc1000 users about the features they miss most. This would help developers (Akai and/or those developing inpedendent operating systems) to decide wich features to give priority in the development process. (Note: features already implemented in OS version 3.x don't need to be included in this list).
I will keep the list updated and I'll try to have it in order (from most wanted to less).

Already implemented:
- MTC & MMC (as in mpc2500 os 1.2)
- Auto-chromatic programs: assign a sample to all pads with chromatic midi notes and tune (as in mpc2500 os 1.2)
- Recordable track mutes (as in mpc2500 os 1.2)
- More settings in Mode 11: LFO, envelope, mutes, etc.
- Swing shift timming: ability to choose elarlier or later (like in older mpc's)

Not implemented:
- Individual start / end points per pad (or only start, as implemented in akai z4/z8 samplers).
- Preview sounds from disk (in load mode) while playing a sequence
- Show note duration in grid edit (with visual bars)
- Trim mode > Edit: insert sound (like in older mpc's)
- Trim mode > Edit: silence (like in older mpc's)
- Tap tempo: tap averaging up to 8

Other:
- Screensaver
- Individual filters per pad layer (if possible to keep sample acurate)
- Individual envelopes per pad layer (if possible to keep sample acurate)
- Trim mode > Edit: insert sound (like in older mpc's)
- Grid mode: show bar/step info
- Full ADSR envelopes support
- Qlink sliders send cc messages through midi in realtime and record them
- Real-time modulation of loop points (with a MIDIvalue, LFO or ENV)
- Ability to move/rearrange regions in chop mode

I will keep updating this list based on the feedback. Wich features to you miss most?

Related to the ability to move/rearrange regions in chop mode, I'd like to see the ability to insert a sample into an existing sample in trim mode, like the 2K's insert function. This would allow us to build new drums from transients and tails on the 1k.

Also, separate volume envelopes per pad layer.

It's worth noting that having separate filters/envelopes per pad layer may be too taxing on the MPC to do in real-time. Any off-line trim/chop mode functions should be fine, though, since they don't have a 'real-time' constraint to satisfy.

agreed. plus, just use the different pad banks for layering purpose - simulating simult. i no longer layer - as i said in a thread that quickly got buried. some of you might remember it, it was a good drum tip.

as for the others - top on my list functionally would be MTC. hands down, this would change my production using the 1k the most.

track mutes - probably wouldn't use them a LOT, but there are times in my songs where everything in X track goes silent for emphasis or for a changeup/transient section. might be helpful here - however, track mutes could be poison to early 1k producers, seeing as how it's an easy way out of doing the legwork/programming, and EVERYONE needs as much programming practice in step edit as they can get

preview samples - don't really care either way. it'd be nice, and i like how we can do that now in Trim, but eh, no huge thing

visual bars - it'd be a little helpful, esp when sequencing strings/etc from reason via the mpc. seeing that tail could help. however, it's not HUGE on the list for me, just...would be nice and doesn't seem like a huge thing to do.

LFO in mode 11 - again, nice touch. would simply make mode 11 even more badass than it already is.

move/rearrange regions in chop mode - nah. don't need it. i mean...if you're gonna chop something, doesn't the rearranging process come after you've chopped it? if i want something rearranged i will just play it in a different order. i do miss the COMBINE function though, but i found out you can merge 2 regions by having the end point of one bulldoze the start poiint of the other.

the two last realistic features that is yet to be implemented in a future OS is a

simple screensaver and
realtimemodulation of loop points with a MIDIvalue, LFO or ENV

I gotta say preview samples while in load mode would be the best for me. I start my mpc clean, no kits or anything loaded. I tailor them to the track. So if I pick a snare and program it, it would be so nice to hear it while I'm scrolling through kick samples. I could hear how the 2 sounds interact with each other instead of trial and error.

pretty simple

-keep "sliced samples", samples stereo and dont force mono them..

btw..ive only had my mpc a few weeks,,wtf is MTC, and why would it be helpful?

I have to agree with all above. I also want to add about the grid edit. That would be hell of a good feature. Also to view the bar.step info. Itll be alot easier to step edit this way. And to see the shifts lot like the new 2500 o/s. The bank info from 1-16 is a nice touch. Also 100% there with the track mutes. I mean theres ways around it. But nothings better than a feature available for it.

Just for the hell of i. I was goin to open a new thread about it. But since you already did. I hope these requests get sent to the developer. These are really good ideas.

i dont know if its possible of even a thing to consider but i would love to have level adjusting meters in the mixer screen ( ie shows them adjusting to the velocity like a meter bridge does ) not just for mixing but to know what track is doing what. i hate it when i have a kit pulled up and i forget whitch pad i hit then i have to go throuhg and try them all to find it ...... drives me crazy.

I'd really like to see (I can dream can't I? ;) :

-more MIDI editing tools/jobs like those in Yamaha sequencers (so I can get rid of my bulky RS7000 ;) ) - see page 133 in the PDF on link below.

-MIDI Play effects per track/pad (e.g. MIDI delay, harmonize (note doubling), note/gate/velocity offset, BEAT STRETCH (stretching/compressing a MIDI sequence), CLOCK OFFSET (very useful)

-more synth parameters (full ADSR envelopes)

And possibly:

-grid groove mode (setting note/gate/velocity offset of notes selected in the grid)

Check this for more insight how there features work with Yamaha's:

MTC is MIDI Time Code and is used to communicate the exact location within a track from one device to another. It's much more specific than MIDI Clock and so most DAW software has switched to exclusively responding to MTC (or other more specific forms of sync such as SMPTE) vs MIDI Clock.

Currently, the MPC1k only sends MIDI Clock messages, which means you can't slave Cubase, Sonar, or whatever else to it, only vice versa. (Press play in Cubase and the MPC starts, not the other way around)

A related request from some is MMC (MIDI Machine Control) which sends pre-determined codes for Play, Rewind, FF, Stop, Pause, Record, etc. This would allow even more remote control possibilities, controlling your daw through your MPC just as you can from numerous other controllers.

MTC & MMC are already in the plans for being available in the final version of the OS being developed by JJ (MPC1000 NEW OS Version1.0). At least they mention it in their page.

I am all about MTC too, but I currently slave live 5 to the 1000, and it works pretty good. Most the remote features just work too. Allthough the results would be superior with MTC.

I wish i was a little bit taller. :P

I wish my MPC Q-link sliders could send CC values to his midi out.

I wish my MPC had another menu where i could see my CC changes per track in graph form just like in Ableton live.

I wish the MPC USB connection could be a host not only a slave.

I wish i could pick witch part goes to the SPDIF output not just the master.

I wish i could program Program changes from the main screen.

I wish the Record Mix Option was default ON.

I wish i could upgrade tha RAM to 512mb or more. 8)

I wish i could wish for MTC and MMC lol, but i guess i don't need to now.

And last but not least
I WISH Akai would take some lessons from JJ

i would like to have the possibility to save the tune differences
of a samplekit from one track to another...
