Unique MPC timing. How does it work?

Maybe this question is obvious for the experts, but i'm new to both the mpc 1000 and this great forum and i couldn't find the answer with search.

On a SoundOnSound Q&A page there was a question from a guy who couldn't match the beats of two songs, whatever he tried.
SoundOnSound (Steve Levine) replied: "I am not aware of what gear was used to generate the drum track in this case, but it is well known that many dance and R&B producers use the various models of Akai/Linn MPC drum/sampling workstations for their drum tracks, and all of these machines have an inherent 'feel' -- small timing delays in the exact quantise position of the beats. In fact I have made a set of MPC grooves (from recording these delays) which I use in Logic, and it perfectly recreates the MPC feel/effect. Looking at the MPC grooves in the edit window of Logic, you can see that they are moved by 6-18 ticks at Logic's high resolution when quantised, so aligning new beats to this groove would cause a flam or drift unless exactly the same groove was used."

Is this true? Does the MPC has a build in groove?

If the songs aren't matched it's possible that the MIDI syncing isn't low, so one machines starts earlier than the other.

But i don't know about the groove in the MPC, all i know is the syncing is very tight!

i have experience this my self using Logic Audio 6 and my new MPC 1000 also.

basically if you create a 2 bar 100bpm Groove with No swing (50%) on 1/16th Quantize...

then take the same 2 bar loop (perfectly trimmed in Recycle) into logic (then tap in the tempo in logic also), the playback is fine.


but when you go to write using logic audio on 1/16th, the 2 grooves dont match up.

its almost like the mpc runs on a slight off groove, and its events seem to be more laid back by minor ticks (even at 1/16th).

but thanks to Logic's virtual delay, i can work around this.

or i can further swing my instrumentation in logic to match the drum beats mde with the mpc.

so yeah...SOS mag is right.

thats where Midi Sync is useful, but not entirley coz you do end up loosing the authentic MPC feel.

I have had success making the mpc loop into a rex file and then quanatizing other stuff (keys or whatever) to it. I don't know about logic, but it works well in reason and cubase/nuendo.

As I understand you two right: if you want for example add single hihat beats to a stiff quantized, one bar hihat sample, you can't use the time correction of the mpc. You have to correct them note by note.
