MPC 2000XL chopping question

I'm new to all this so I've a lot to learn. My problem right now is chopping a sample. What I do is load the sample into the mpc and hit Shift 5. From there what I do is press the zone key to create my chops. So from here I chose the number of zones I want chopped and I press "do it". Now I have the number of zones I want. Next I manually adjust the zones to my liking and press edit once I'm done. From there it says slice sounds and I then press "do it". The problem after that is that all the manual adjsutments that I had just performed on my chops have just been changed or reseted by the slice sound function. I really don't know what to do to fix this so if anyone knopws what I'm doing wrong please explain it to me carefuly so I can sleep at night.... One more thing, how do you manually assign the pads that you want your samples or chops to play from?
