MPC2000xl Program & Midi file compatibility...

I have had a 2000xl for over 7 years and was really interested in selling it to buy a 1000 due to the much better computer compatibility and improvements they have made (plus I like that it's smaller). But my big dilemma is that I have hundreds of old programs and midi files made on the 2000xl that I would like to be able to use on the 1000. Are they compatible? I need someone with some actual experience with this as nothing is mentioned on Akai's site (at least that I could find). I have the EB16 effects card in my xl, too, if that makes any difference.

i was in the exact same spot as you are a couple of weeks ago. And despite the timeconsuming process of converting all my beats from my 2kxl to my 1k it was worth it in the end.

The thing is with the mpc 1000 is that it only reads programs and sequences saved as midi file (type 1 i think). And i had all my beats saved ass .all "sequences and programs". But if you have programs and midifiles then its really easy to open them in your 1k, never had anyloading problem with that. You do have to set your mixer settings again, but that goes fast.
The main drawback is the fact that the 1k doesnt have SIMULT, so you have to modify your 2kxl programs and layer the sounds on one pad with the 1k. But that goes pretty fast too, the thing that took me the longest time was to resave all my 2kxl beats into programs and midifiles.

My main issue with the mpc1000 is that it feels waaay cheaper and fragile than the mpc2000xl, and im not sure if i can sell my 2kxl even though i need the cash. The datawheel feels like it's going to break any day, and the pads has already began to break. But overall the 1k is still my 1st choise for beatmaking, since i want to do as much as possible on my mpc and not my pc. And the loading time is insane compared to my 2kxl.

Thanks for the info Soulscientist. All my songs are saved with both a .MID (I think type 1) file and a .PGM which sounds like it won't be much of a headache to open on the 1000. Does the 1000 have the same effects settings/options as the EB16? That's another thing I was concerned with since the effects that are on a particular sound may be crucial to the way that sound works in the song. Have you had any experience with that? Luckily I don't think I ever really used SIMULT much but having to reset the mixer sounds like a headache.

That's a shame that it's cheaper feeling too...although I kinda baby these type of things

whaddup yall, im workin my way backwards...i had an MPC 1k BK for about 7 months...just yesterday, i bought a 2000XL Blue with the CF card reader...and i must say, going from the 1k to the 2k xl is dope and has draw backs at the same time.

The new blue XL feels alot lighter than the older one. The pads on the XL are to die for compared to the 1k...

however, i am missing the fact that i dotn have multiple filters on the xl, not a biggie, the USB capabilites (not a biggie i still got the 1k)...

the 1k spoiled me, now that im on the XL, the SI mult is freakin awesome, my drums have never banged harder...no go on 1k files openin up on the xl eh?

The files that are compatible with the 2k/2kxl is in each machines respective manual.

Have a look and THEN you'll know exactly instead of waiting for an answer?

Key to understanding WHICH files can beloaded is that you must understand the CONTENTS of the files, just experimenting and getting it wrong will just do nothing but piss you off. Also know what the contents of each file pertain to in each machine. IE. there is a project file available in the 1k right? Does the 2k/2kxl even HAVE project files?

Read the manual and see.

Loading the programs wont be a problem. There is definatley a difference in the effects setting though. I used to do several different effects on the 2kxl, and created nice sounds with that. But the 1k only have 2 different effects you can add and you can use them together but then its gonna sounds quite different from doing the same on the 2kxl.
So this is a drawback with the 1k, you should sample the most tweaked programs from your 2kxl as a wav and load that into your 1k.
