MPC Backups ~ best practices

Today i lost about 12 hours of work because my MPC suddently decided to stop booting with the AutoLoad data that i had been working on.

I remember with the 2000, i used to have to save All Programs and Sounds, and then All Sequences and Songs, and then load them manually each time i started the MPC.

Perhaps i'll return to this methodology. It's nice to backup the CFs to the computer, but when i restored my data from the "ALL" directory that i had backed up. It was screwy. Lots of missing samples etc.

So back to the good old method i guess, I wonder if anyone else has had issues backing up data to the pc or losing it on the Card. -kind of scary.

One other thing that may have screwed me was i initiated my saves in OS 9, but then tried to restore the data to the CF from os X. I don't know what i was thinking there....

Still a disaster. What are other people doing to backup this system?

One more thing- how about that ribbon connector in the RAM compartment? Anyone know what that's going to be for? can't wait.

When I first got my 1000, the first thing I did, was to turn off the Autoload. I didn't find any use for it. I never trust anything that is "auto"... even my car is manual

I usualy SAVE ENTIRE MEMORY, and from time to time, copy the whole CF card on my computer. But I use CF card reader to do this. It is faster, and safer, IMO.

One more thing- how about that ribbon connector in the RAM compartment? Anyone know what that's going to be for? can't wait.

I thing there might be a possiblity to connect a n internal laptop harddrive. There is room for it, and the connector is there...so

Do what effekt said....save entire memory into it's own directory on the card. Also make sure if you make changes and then want to save, the dialog box that comes up asks "Replace same files" and is usually set to no....make sure you change to yes.

That sounds obvious but I missed it when I first started using the mpc and lost a bit of work.

osx is awesome for working with the mpc. OS9 felt very messy in comparison.

one thing i really like about it is how you can have a folder hanging out like an alias in the lefthand side of every finder window.

when i want to back up a song that i have on my cf card here's how i do it. i think it is really fast and simple -

i put the cf card in my card reader (best $20 you'll ever spend mpc-wise BTW) and double click on it so it opens in a finder window. i keep a folder in the sidebar of the window called "mpc songs" (well, technically i guess it's sort of an alias)

i just drag all the songs i want to backup into the folder. it asks me if want to replace and i say yes.

this way i dont need to keep an extra folder or alias called "mpc songs" on the desktop and i also dont need go finding that folder every time i want to b/u either.

doesnt sound too impressive in wiritng but in practice it's cool

oh, and i also spent my 1st week with the mpc wondering what the fück was causing me to lose work like that over and over again. gee, i dont know why, but once i got a little more comfortable with the mpc the problem seemed to fix itself

This is common when people do not wait long enough for all the data to transfer before removing cards or unplugging the cable. CF communication are typically asynchronous, meaning the PC transfers when it feels like it (a slow method of transfer).

My reader has an activity light and it is typical that it is busy for many seconds even after the `moving files` box disappears from the screen.
