Does the filter STEP?

Just curious if the filters on the MPC step when you use them or are they nice and smooth...also can you overdrive them at all or make them more aggressive if needed??

They are smooth man. No zipper for sure. You can't overdrive them with high resonance levels like other Akai samplers. Maybe by layering them. I haven't tried that yet. I approve of them though. And just so you know, filter quality is a huge factor when I buy gear. You'll of course have to be you're own judge but ,again, I like the the 2.5K filters alot.

the LP2 filters sound sweet since OS2.1 and respond very well when punished in linked mode. i even use it to process my DX100 wich does'nt have no filter.
the selfoscillating resonace is good enough to make kickdrums and deepbassounds when sweept with ENV or LFO.

well i guess the filters are pretty much the same so maybe it aplies to the 2500 aswell.

I would say as an effect , the filters are bad , but if you use them as eq's they do a pretty good job.

I disagree. Sure they will work as an EQ but I would try the EQ in the effects section first and then the filters if the EQ couldn't take care of my frequency issues. This MPC has super sweet and smooth filter sweeps on bass waveforms or any low frequency samples and you can use it on your pads and strings for a tastey little bit of movement to liven them up.

DrumandBass guy, into drum and bass I presume? You'll like what the filters can do. I know because I too am a Drum & Bass head. Seriously though, go to your local music store and check it out for yourself. Bring some of your own samples on Compact Flash and see if the filters are up to snuff for your taste.

Well , compared to the filters on my virus C , the mpc filters sound like they are made by behringer .
They may be smooth , but if you wanna make something scream , the mpc will let you down.
This is why i say the mpc filters are good for eq but not really good as an effect , .......... not that they're totally useless though.

Agreed , but the nice thing about using the filters as eq's is that you basically have a 2-band eq on every pad , and for drums that's all i need when making a track .
I leave fine-tuning for the mixing stage.

I DO have a Virus C so should I run everything thru there to roughen it up for d'n'b and use the MPC for nice smooooooth warm filtersweeps??

I was only speaking in reference to the 2500 filters and EQ.
ANd yeah, MPC filters don't come close to a Virus's. Still adaquate for my needs.

Yeah , i think you'll have better results that way , maybe try the filter sweeps with the virus c too , you can tweak the cutoff on the virus and the mpc will record it so you can play the sweep back.
Everything (well , allmost everything) you do on the virus gets recorded on the mpc as CC-data , like cutoff , resonance , FM-amount , amp envelope tweaks , etc... so you can make really interesting sweeps when using patches on the virus by sweeping more then one knob.
