Whats the diff betwn the small hole and the big hole?

I would like to order some vinyl, but im confused.

Most records I see have a small hole in the middle. Like the one in the link below.

But then there are times when i see a record and it has a bigger hole in the middle like this one here.

1. do these types or records have special names? what are the names?

2. do i need a special record player to play each?

3. Is there a way to modify the big hole?

Your answer: The record with the little hole is your standard 12" record. These play at 33 rpm (for the most part).

the record with "the big hole" is called a 45. They play at 45 rpm's.

Your turntable should have setting for speed, 33, 45 and some have 78 rpm.

Your turntable may have come with a 45 adapter, which is nothing more than a spacer that fits over the existing pin of your turntable. If you don't have one you can buy one at most record shops/ gear stores.

yeah those holes are different but all you need is an adaptor for the big hole which is called a 45(7") and that will let you play it on the same record player as the one with the little hole which is 12" or lp's all 33 1/3 rmp the big hole one is playede on 45 RPM but you will find 45's that will play oin the same 33 2/3 speed. your not the first to ask this question in here dont worry it's just funny to some . it feels strange to some one like me when i have been diggin for records for 30 yrs and i meet some people that think that records are new and there twice my age but young kids like your self i can see why , your folks prolly never told you about records and all they own is CD's i have three kids and they now about records at least my 5 yr old does casue i teach him what i know so when he gets older he will know about the cutlure and keep it going.

In Australia, 90% of the 7"s have small holes. Some have a piece you can break out to make the larger hole so it will play in juke boxes.

hahahaha try to break that piece out with out breakin or crackin the record it's all one piece you have to cut it out ,and it hard ass VINYL
i just tried that the other day we were tossing out a record that was broke on the edge but stillintact and i tried to snap that piece out and it's hard man . but then again i didnt have the strength that i usually have i just had surgery on my arm three days four days ago.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the oldschool records that require a spider/adapter do so, because of the larger hole in the middle were for Jukebox use.

You still get new 7"s with these though for some reason.

the difference between the small hole and the big hole ......is the big one feels and smells better but the smaller one is tighter and could get messy.

Yeah im learning all I can, which is why im asking all the stupid questions. Yeah i never really cared about records until now. I just simply listend to music and toyed around with software here and there. Music is simply a hobby for me, nothing more nothing less.

But anywa, Im glad I ask the stupid questions now, so that a couple months from now, I could look back and see how much i have learned.
