what do any of you do when trying to get the bpm of say a looped sample you want to use.. i tried using that tep tempo thing but didnt work well

any help would be good

I use Cool Edit Pro. You have to go to view time. Highlight the bars you want to know the BPM for Select edit time. Enter in the number of bars hit extract and whallah! BPM's. Also Acid Pro tells you BPMs everytime you load a sample. I've tried the winbmp and I didn't like it at all.

click on View - Click on display time format - click on bars and beats - highlight your sample - go back to View - Click on display time format - click on edit tempo - And Waaalllllaaaah! type in how many bars you selected and hit extract button. It will display your BPM

i use logic, i know how to do it all on pc , im talkin about the mpc,...

ive been doing pc production for years but just got an mpc, so its all new to me...

I'm doing it "the hard way", I trust my ears and not my eyes :twisted:
Here is my way:
- i load the sample to the mpc and assign it to any pad and set it as "ose shot" and "mono" instead of "poly"
- then i click [rec]+[play start] and hit the pad at the firts tick of the first bar (001:01:00)
- then i just lissen if it loops correctly. If not, i adjust the tempo and/or tone, uniil there is no overlapping or silence.

I do it this was as well. I think its the best way to do it. Let your ears hear because when JoeSchmoe is listening to it, he's not looking at a screeen, he's listening and he's going to hear if its off.

I agree with the ears thing, but knowing the BPM of the sample before hand makes things very easy when working with the MPC. It saves loads of time.

You can also use a little math, if you have a calculator or spreadsheet handy and MPC gives you the number of samples in your loop:

Code: Select all          60 x beats x 44100
BPM =     ------------------
               samples


This assumes the sample rate is 44100, of course. So, if you have a 98,000-sample loop with 4 beats, that's 108BPM, and so on.

You gotta know what your sample rate is. Standard for cd quality audio is 44.1k. Then open the sample your trying to loop in the mpc. in the upper right hand corner of the screen it will tell you how many samples the loop is. then you plug the info from you loop into the equasion that was given. as an example a 1 bar loop that is 100000 samples long would be 98.4 bpm.

98.4 bpm= 60*4*44100
--------------
100000
