Are you talking about the 2500?
If so then no they are associated, you can add a drive without having the CDR.

It's just funny.
I was hating on the 2500 compared to the other MPC I own or have owned.
The more time I spun actually using the 2500 really let me see it's a pretty tight box, the function and workflow is nice.
It's hard to evaluate a piece anywhere other than your real work doing some real work.
If you haven't put something through the paces it's ok to say you don't like it or that it's not for you, but you can't call it junk or a toy.
If you haven't clocked some ral hours on it, you can't dismiss it as junk or a toy.
