How do you store your records (earthquake environments)

Ok, as simple as it is alot of places, just build a sturdy shelf, in places like cali, it might not be such a good idea to put 200lbs of vinyl (i don't have that much but i know alot of you do) above say shoulder high, if that. I don't have alot of records right now, probably 200 or so but it's growing and fast. I figure it's best to do something ahead of time instead of figuring out things later when i need the room. I don't have alot of floor space, i figure someone probably has come up with something creative. The obvious solution is putting things in another room, which will probably happen. I like things in arms reach. If you have any suggestions, please let me know. I'm not about to stack records to my roof.

earthquakes: whatever, they're gonna happen i guess... spread your stuff out as much as possible... i dunno about them...

but check this:

don't alphabetize your records!

my father, he is an engineer... total nerd, all the mathmatical nerdery crossed over into his records, alphabetized them all (i love how i consider alphabetizing records = nerdery in my mind)... anyways, my folks had this one cat, aka real feline animal, what peed in the corner... well, pops had them things alphabetized, so when the cat peed in the corner, it peed on the A's and B's...

Beatles records: to this day, they smell vaguely of cat pee. feline urine remnants...

so me, these days, i've learned from that:
I put whatever record wherever.

seriously.

I pretty much have a system where the further away from the turntable it is, the less frequently it got played... It's not perfect, I have to search forever for something I THINK i have.... but, the stuff isn't all in one place when it comes to cat pee...

don't put all your eggs in one basket, pretty much: have the back 2 the hotel right next to the dilla donuts right next to the prince single... have it everywhere and nowhere at once...

ps this method only works if you have less than 1387 records... otherwise you may search forever for one single.

So if I have 1388 records, I'm screwed.....DAMN!

for a while i had crates on there side, raised off the ground, stacked 2 crates high. Then i took some wide planks of finished wood and secured it to the top of the crates. this gave me counter top space around 3 sides of my room, with all the vinyl very accesable and not stacked too high. then i got a dope desk and fender rhodes, so all records are now stacked on one wall. but, no earthquakes up here.

odorcide will get rid of animal urine.

maybe a better solution is to not have cats.

at at least ones that piss on your records. But I think it's important that you should have a cat or two to watch you diggin' through your collection.




On the storage issue, I use those heavy-duty wire bakers racks - they're rated at like 600 lbs, I think. I definitely don't keep them above my head, though - not so much 'cuz of earthquakes, but I don't want to reach that high to grab a heavy-a$$ crate of records.

i bury my records in the back yard then "dig" them up when i need them.

OK, if you look in this crate i have a rope goin through it ,it runs through all the crates on my wall of vinyl there all tie straped together too, for better stability,
back the the rope tho , it runs across the hole wall from side to side weaving in a nd out of it but on the ends theres eyebolts screwd into the wall on each side , now i'm not sure how Quake proof it is but i know i have it tied down and hopefully that will save me some time to run over and get buried when it does come down , i just know i dont want to think about that time , cause i live right on top or a block away from the Hayward fault. and if my records go in goin with them.


this is what my wall lokks like but i got more then this,all on the floor and in another two shelf's , shoot i just got another 200+ records this weekend, not to mention the other 500-900 records in my living room


@ bobbybigbeats ...man how the hell you goin to say your pops a nerd man... he's given you a direction on how to keep your records ...that cat thing is just something that you have to deal with ,with kids and animals.. i bet your dad can find any record you wanted to hear quicker then you can, in your collection, ....thats how i keep my collection in order ,alphabetical, and Bmp everything falls into place that way.

the only problem i have is putting shi+ back after i do a gig and thats twice a week.

Not much earthquake proof going on here, I just try not to stack the crates too high.
