Studio Monitors vs. Headphones

What up guys!!1

I have a monitoring system that my set-up is running through, it is a surround sound reciever with pretty nice infinity speakers but , honestly I don't really use it that much for monitoring I mainly do all of my monitoring from a pair of sony MDR-V700's. Is there a reason I should buy studio monitors or can I just keep using my headphones? I do notice that the mix sounds a little different when I play through the reciever.

yes, your mixes will definitely benefit with the addition of some proper monitors, but you also have to consider the acoustics of your room if you want it to translate well to other systems.

just my opinion... but I would use a pair of monitors , you will hear the sound of the room aswell but you need to learn how to control the sounds coming from the speaker if you plan letting other people listen to your music from speakers aswell .

If you plan to have everyone listen thru headphones then thats fine.
There is no rule

but I have a feeling you may want to learn to master whats coming from the speaker.


PS try to use it in Stereo mode instead of surround ( you may find it a little easier)

it seems like whenever i am out and about and make a beat with my headphones i will get it sounding all good and tasty and then i put it on my speakers when i get home and the levels are all blown out of proportion.

i always have to monitor on speakers too.

i use a combination of both so i can make sure i can hear the sounds properly no matter what i'm listening to it through.

i'll even pop it in the PC and listen to it on those speakers sometimes. Just to make sure the levels aren't wack.

headphones will make u deaf after prolonged usage (20 yrs later)

be careful

a combination of both would be the best, because both setups have advantages and disadvantages.
with a headphone you can hear certain sounds a little clearer also the stereo imaging is a little stronger because of the clear separation of the channels.
with speakers you feel more of the body impact of the bass and it may sound a little more washed out, because sound from either speaker will reach each of your ears a little later than the other.
a third thing to do when listening to a mix would be to switch it to mono to see if any frequencys get cancelled out.

bass can't be accurately reproduced on a woofer less than 8" so do the math. i check mixes on headphones and if i am in a bind i can mix on headphones but i would not do it if i were u.

Use headphones, monitors, boomboxes, car stereo, computer speakers...etc...ie anything you can get your hands on...if it sounds ok through them all...you are good to go.

i think he is talking about mixing on and not to check mixes. we all know it's important to check mixes on as many systems as u can

i dont think its a good idea mixing anything with headphone on. maybe to help with panning? but not trying to get your levels right.or maybe it was just me and my cheapo $50 radioshack headphones? anytime I would try to find a good mix with the headphones on, i would take them off and the mix would be sh!t.

but thats just my experience
