I've been in China for the past month but I'm back.

I will try to contact Akai next week and report back here what I learn.
I'm quite busy these days, recording a CD and holding down another job at the same time, so I'm volunteering to make contact with Akai on behalf of this idea (open sourcing the OS or otherwise facilitating OS development on the MPC4000), but I won't be able to contribute much beyond that I'm afraid.

Ok, we're back on track!

I contacted some product development managers at Akai/Numark, and I'm afraid I have only bad news to report. They are unwilling to release either source code or documentation, and more generally are unwilling to support an independent OS development for the MPC4000 (the whole MPC line I think).

I don't think that there is much that we could do to change their minds about this. In other words, I don't think it's a question of who would be doing the development or what would be developed, etc. I think that it's simply categorical: they won't release the intellectual property that's inside the MPCs.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news...

Akai will not help. The only thing we can do is developing from scratch.

right now i'm seriously considering taking up coding. i have a really good idea that would allow for a grid edit for qlink realtime data in the mpc1000/2500 that i'm about to pose to the JJs, it's kind of similar to what you guys have going on, just on a 240 by 60 pixil screen. i have it all worked out, button/display and function wise...

if i knew how to code it i'd be all over this goddamn thing

I'm totally sympathetic to these efforts of course. But I gotta say that I'm really pessimistic that this is feasible without at least documentation of the hardware itself. To begin, we would have to reverse engineer the hardware platform and map it out. It's a big hairy deal to do this. Don't get me wrong -- very complicated gizmos have been reverse-engineered before; but it's not a task for the faint of heart.

Does anyone know how JJ obtained the information they needed to do the 1000/2500 development work they have done? Their software does not seem to be open-sourced; at least I could not find source for it anywhere. Did they reverse engineer the platform? Has anyone on this forum communicated with them?
