folders show up as " . "

im getting sick of this

i just spent 2+ hours organizing samples and .pgm files on my 1gb SD card, and then almost every folder showed up as " . ", a single period.

this happens pretty regularly, sometimes I can even just go in and change the name (on the computer, not the mpc) and it will show up on the mpc.

im using 1.20 on a mpc2kxl

i swear im going to sell this relic and get a 1000!!!! every day i get more and more sick of my 2000xl.....

Remember you can only use 8 characters or less.

but remember, when you go over the limit it just puts the little "gibberish" characters in place of everything past 5 (I think)

this is a whole other animal - the folder name shows up fine, but the type shows up as " . "

also a whole new problem is that lately my file directory explorer has been locking up...

ok, so when I go to select a folder that contains folders that show up as " . " i cant do anything. total lock up, cant go back - even when i go back to main screen and go back to load it still doesnt work

This is caused by an incomptibility between the character set used in DOS (windows) and the one on the MPC. I often get "illegal" characters on a wav on the MPC and when I do it doesn't let me load the wav. Funny thing is, though, it will let me if it is part of a program and I load that program.

Avoid spaces and any other "special" characters like asterisks etc. to be on the safe side.

ok, good advice - but dig this, my problem comes from loading the sd card on my ibook and making new folders on it and re-arranging my pgms, sounds and sequences....when i load the card on the mpc it does all of the above (" . " , file directory freeze)

so to recap, i never go over 8 characters, never use spaces or anything other than normal letters, and everything is fine. however, when i re-organize stuff on the card, the mpc wont recognize it anymore

ok, so i did this....some folders still shows up as " . " some didnt

now i've got a whole new problem - everytime i go into my "DRUMS" main folder the damn file browser locks up totally!!! cant go back to main screen, cant do anything

I AM READY TO THROW MY MPC OUT THE WINDOW

its probably that mac your using. my mpc gets along great with XP.

i would agree, but i've had problems using it on both mac and pc...even re formatting and using on pc only gives me major problems....

the new thing now is even after reformatting and trying to not create too many folders on pc, it just freezes up. the directory wont let me move back, sometimes it freezes completely.


I have been using this card for well over a month, i've re formatted it on mpc, tried using it with both mac and pc, tried creating main folders and then creating sub folders on mpc to copy sounds in (defeats purpose of having flash media, imo)

im really frustrated at this point. I have a 128mb cf card that doesnt seem to mess up....maybe its the sd??? but i've been using it for quite a while, no problems until now...

btw i have 1.21 OS

It's probably the sd card. I've tried a sd card yesterday. Formatted it on the pc, it didn't work. Then i formatted on the mpc, and it still didn't work. The strange thing is, i then rebooted my mpc and used my cf card. The whole damn mpc just froze up! No matter what i did, it wouldn't read the cf card anymore and kept saying "no floppy".
I opened up my mpc and everythging was still connected correct.
I then turned off my mpc and left it alone for an hour. Suddenly it worked like it always did.
Just to check i tried the sd card again (a different one) and the same ish happened again.


I'll stick to my trusted cf cards and backup as many times as possible.

Hope u fix this, i would say loose the sd card and use cf's.

Try this..

Use Compact Flash cards and create your directories on the MPC only.
Use one compact flash card to move your samples from the computer to the MPC.
Use another compact flash card for saving your program/samples on the MPC.

This way you can be sure that errors are minimized as your not introducing any bits of information that is saved from the computer (remember that the mac os is based on UNIX now. Its highly possible there are bits of data that are being moved into the MPC that are unrecognized due to the directories, permissions, etc of UNIX ..(If the MPC cant recognize the data it will either ignore it or alert you via a lock up perhaps.. Maybe that explains the freezes and the "."? )

Also think about using a high quality, but a smaller compact flash MB cards ( such as a 512MB).I heard somewhere that many people have had issues with larger cards. But many people have mentioned they are fine with larger cards and using one between the MPC and a computer..Not sure..
