Record Store Employment

Was just diggin' and the owner of the store offered me a shift on Saturdays 10 - 6 runnnin his shop. Said he'd offer $10 an hour in records. I already have a well paying job so this would just be for my vinyl habit. I mean i could basically spend the 8 hours looking for the $80 worth of records i'll be taking home, every Saturday. Not to mention first crack at the incoming selections before everyone else. Seems like a no brainer right.

Do it. Nothing beats first dibs on records. Sh!t comes in that never even makes it to the rack. And you'll be able to swipe it. Do it until you have more records than you need. Then give 'em two weeks notice.

My favorite job in LIFE was at a record store--Vinyl Fever in Tallahasse, FL. I felt like Homer Simpson when he got that job at the bowling alley.

All I had to do was run register, sweep, and peel the On Sale stickers off the merchandise after the sale. Got most of the records i own from that place. I got fired. I didn't know i had to work that Thursday. Really.

yeah...my part time job is at a record store...which i love...but I don't get paid $10 hour. Thats good wages for working in a vinyl joint....and I been at my spot for almost 4 years and I'm still a dollar and 1/2 away from $10.

but i'll tell you this much you will see a lot of vinyl and a lot of shi+ when you run a record store thres alot of work involved it's not a s gravey as you think but then again your only running it one day? right

i clean and wipe down records and go through my stock and find shi+ out of place all day long, the best part though is that you can listen to any record you want, your music herizion will expand greatly
.so not be to quick to jump on just anything you see,, pick quality stuff and try to stick to OG's not represses, read the liner notes too cause that will teach you so much more about the music your getting or looking for.

this has been my dream job for my hole life and i got it , and i run the hole store , some times i feel like it belongs to me cause i make the decisions and my buddy just comes in and checks up on it

plus i can get any records i want

my 45 coleection has grown MAD in the last few weeks

i'd say it depends on how many records 80 bucks gets you at that spot.

it's the biggest store in central and northern vermont. they have quite a range in price. Dude usually puts his rare/ high end stuff on ebay. So you might encounter a $25 dollar piece every now and then. There is a ton of great shit in the 6 - 10 dollar range. The dollar bins are stacked with some ill shit. The other day i copped 2 $7 records and 10 $1 records and dude(the owner) only charged me $15. He hooks it up for me as i'm a regular. IT pays to chat with the people behind the counter, probably the most overlooked aspect of diggin'.

Yeah man it's always good to build relationships with owners. I found a shop in grand rapids that was pretty nice. Lot's of Guitar Watson, Booker T, Lonnie Liston Smith, etc. Most were OG and going for 8-10 bones.

So I grabbed about 75 dollars worth pre-tax and went up to the counter. He asked where I lived, I told him, and he had the same hometown! He gave me the hometown discount, which made the total 40 dollars .

So we kept talking about listening vs. sampling and I better be doing more of the former lol and just stuff like that. He writes his email on one of his cards, gives it to me. He tells me that I can send him wantlists whenever I want and he'll do his best. Also that I'll be getting that same discount every time I come to the store!

a bandit? nah man. you'd be better off getting a job at a thrift shop. you might only make $6/hr there but that gets you at least 6 records per hour vs. 1-2. and i'd say 6 is low-ballin it, most of the thrift shops i hit up sell for .25 a piece. just as slack of a job but you still get first pick on all the vinyl that comes in. i used to work at a local thrift and i would walk out of that place with madd stax for cheap as ****.
