Record Store Employment

if you knew what the thrift stores are like up here you wouldn't say that. I wouldn't work in these joints for records. They got like 2 crates, no rotation, basic shit. If i want a remotly rare or good record i'm going to one of 2 places and this is one of them. I collect for coleecting's sake, and am not always trying to see how many cheap azz records i can get (though i do that also). If i see something i want and it's worth the asking price imo, i'll get it. I'm not broke so i don't mind dropping $15 on a old funk/ jazz album if it's dope, and i haven't seen it before. Money doesn't scare me, i'd just like the idea of a work/trade, and i get to hang out in a record shop all day. shit doesn't sound so bad to me. Hanging out in a thrift store all day just to get a better "deal" is missing the point of where i'm coming from.

Almost got a job at a store last spring working the dance section- got an interview and everything - over 'dj' friends that were scrambling to apply too. It was part-time, 25 to 30 hrs for 9.75. I would have been broke but happy.

But, in the end, I didn't get it. They wanted somebody with graphic design exp, plus I get into some obscure stuff, but not necessarily the stuff playing the clubs here, so I got passed over. Damn - now I work in a boring office job. I'd still take less hours and a little less pay to work with records.

i used to work at a shop that my boy owned.
it was cool cuz he only sells jazz, soul breaks and rare groov records.
yeah he has the usual rock and indy stuff as well as the usual dollar stuff but mostly smokin joints.
i ran the shop when he was out diggin or had family stuff.
more on call then set hours.
anyway
he had a mpc 2000 set up behind the counter and an emu sp1200 next to that
both hooked up to a mackie 1202.
ouch
he payed me in crdt but while i worked i could sample and save anything i wanted.
when it was slow i went through mounds of dope stuff and saved my samples in bulk to a zip and then at home fine chopped stuff.
it was so sweet
i mean i wasnt looking for really long samples but just having all that inventory at my fingers was cool.
i ended up with wax i wanted to listen to instead of stuff only for samples.
it was great
also i felt like it really helped me step up my ears and expand my tastes.
