Why didn't the 60 come with filters?

I kind of been wondering this lately. Filter are usually a major concern as far as purchasing a synth or a sampler and how people remember samplers and synths of old. I mean what is the first thing people say about the SP? Even before mentioning the ringmod after pitching down samples. The same with the studio 440 and the prophets. I like using my s-550 to filter but I still kinda think this wasn't a smart move on akai's part.

The 60 didn't come with filters because it sampled at 40 KHz.

I'll let you figure out why, it would have been cool tho.

True indeed, it did come out before us hiphoppers were using filters for basslines

Probably for the same reason '86 VW Golf didn't have air conditioning

also because it is was meant to be a drum machine, and drum machines usually don't have filters (save for the SP)

im still thinkin 3000 for filter..the debate goes on..

indeed it's one of the two reasons why I would get rid of the 60 (other being memory).

the linn and 440 didn't go to 40K Hz, the linn filters were not controlable without a mod, and only present on some pads.

Filters were to remove aliasing at low sample rates in drum samplers.

like aliasing is so bad for drums god I love hiphop

FYI; The 440 goes up to 41Khz.
(plu syou can add a resonant fliter mod).

As to the 60 not havin filters... Who knows really, this was ages ago.
And keep in mind it was the 1st generation MPC. It's still the great machine it is though none the less!

thanks for the correction, but the filters were intended to take out aliasing at lower sampling rates, the 60 was fixed at 40k, so filters were not required. Linn mentions this in interviews I read, but it's also common sense, creative use of filters wasn't as important as getting a high fidelity sound out of the box, if you remember people were trying to sound like real drums back then, that's what they needed filters for. It's a clear design decision, but people forget to think like they did back then when they consider old gear designs.

And true back then they wanted to sound like `real drums`.
I remember going to music stores in the late 80's & thats what the sale guys pitch was always about, sounding like a real drummer.
Making "hip-hop" beats was not as widespread as it is now.

I am not sweating the lack of filters so much, there are so many options these days, like Mooger Foogers, etc...
If one was crafty enough they could probably build a small hardware filter & install it inside the MPC 60.

I brought up the 440 specs as I just rebuilt mine this weekend, and I have an MPC 60ii coming as well.
My cipher will soon be complete!

Anyways, I am new here fellas - great board/site, man never had anything like this back when I 1st started!
I currently use a 3000LE as my main machine.
The filters are cool, but nothing to go crazy over.

never went inside my 60 but it should be able to do that. It probably would be like having the block space of a 72 caddy compared to newer mpcs.
