Mackies vs. the competition...

i'm in the market for some new monitors as the old ones I have are justnot cutting it...i've been eyeing the Mackies for awhile now and I feel like its time to step up to some quality being that they are the ones that every magazine i flip thru raves about and they are a pretty penny(1400 a pair)...but i've been also looking at the cheaper priced ones like the Events and and I jsut wanted to know if the mackies were truly a good investment or could I get by with the Events.....unfortunately there arent any places off hand where I can hear them side by side in action though I have heard the events and they are cool but I havent heard the mackies so I cant even begin to make a good solid comparison......

Are you copping passive or active monitors? If you have the money cop for a pair of active speakers like the Tannoy Reveals. Another good option (which I am considering myself) are the Mackie Tapco's

The Mackie 824 near field monitors are awesome. My friend has them in his studio and his stuff sounds amazing. He says the mixes translate perfectly too. I have noticed that wth the CDs that he gives me. They sound great on my sad, little system too.

There are other monitors to look at in that price range of course. If you are thinking of that kind of high roller expense you should visit the gear oriented forums like:

You should go to a Guitar Center and ask them to let you hear a few monitors in a side by side comparison. The reason I say this is because I was planning on buying Event PS8s and when I listened to them next to a set of Event PS6s, I realized the PS6s were good enough for what i needed them for. I ended up saving a bit o' cash. I'm not saying you should get Events, but for that price you should try the Mackies next to something else before you buy them. Guitar Center usually has a nice little control room set up that is adequate for such comparisons.

Well, I got the 824's. And I have to say, it's probably the best thing I've bought yet. It's not easy buying monitors cause even in the store, it's not the same room you are working in. It is unbelievable how accurate the mixes are on other systems. The way it sounds out of those things translates perfect. I went from NS-10's to these things and it's a million times better. I used to have to take mixes out to the car, remix, back out to the car. That s*** is over.

That said, I've seen a bunch of complaints from people about having a real hard time finding replacement tweeters and woofers. So even though they have a built in compressor, I make sure not to really blast em too much. Plus I got em new at guitar center for about $1100, you can probably grab a pair on ebay for maybe 9 bills. And also, these things are so good that I can work at a much lower volume and hear everything - makes your ears last longer. The hype about them is justifed IMHO, I'd get em if you can swing it.

I have the Event TR-5 midel, and they sound really good. I am not just saying this because I won them. These speakers are small, but put out a very large sound. If you position them right, in a triangular facing patern, and withen the "Sweet spot" They are pretty bassy for the size.

To tell the truth, I wont even have to upgrade to a larger model because, if I keep the volume at the right level, the bass is quite aqurite.

just kidding, I think your best bet is to buy something, test it and return it for something else, try that and then choose one.
