You would need to assign different pitches to different pads or use the "16 Levels" function. Obviously you will end up with the same sample pitched up and down the pads but it works in a pinch. Ideally you would have a program that contained individual samples of each note assigned to each pad.

What you're asking about is not whether it is multitimbral but whether it automatically transposes samples up and down the keyboard, which it does not.

Multitimbral action means that more than one voice is playable at a time. IE, you have your drums on one program on your synth, your bass on another, your lead on another, and sampled guitar on another. Polyphonic is another term you'll see thrown around a lot, and that simply means that more than one note per voice is playable at a time. IE, back in the day a synth could only play one note at a time, but as technology has crept up, synths are majorly polyphonic. The MPC is this as well, being able to play multiple iterations of a sample simultaneously, as in chords.

So yes, the MPC1k is multi-timbral, though it can't be controlled as a multi-timbral tone generator, it has to be using its own sequencer for such capability to come into play.

Do you mean that its not possible to use the MPC1000 to sequence the drums and then record the midi output of its tracks to something like Logic Audio and make it play the MPC sampled sounds as if it was the MPC1000 the sequencer? In fact using it as a sound module?

If this is the case, is it possible to record the mute/unmute of tracks in realtime? In the MPC or in one outside sequencer?

No, that''ll work, the point is that you'd be limited to one MPC Program controlled by Logic. You can't selectively say "Program 1 (drums) plays from MIDI channel 10" and "Program 2 (basses) plays from MIDI channel 11" - that means it's not a multitimbral sound module. You have the option to limit response to incoming MIDI, so that not all incoming MIDI notes are played, but that's not much help there.

What you could do is create huge Programs with up to 64 Pads you need at any one time. A Pad can be a unique sample or another with different parameters (detuned, filtered etc.), limited by the memory (16MB standard). You can also set up Program Change numbers so that Logic can switch Programs on the fly.

Still, the designers cleary expect you to use the MPC as the Master and slave everything else to that, and I agree, especially when you're looking for solid rhythms - this is what the MPC series does best.

Within a Sequence, you can define a Track's destination as "Drum" (meaning the internal sampler) or "MIDI", then select MIDI destination by output and channel e.g. B10. With the right hardware you can have the MPC controlling 32 channels of MIDI directly.

Then you have all the facilities of the slaved sequencer (VSTi etc.) running off the MPC's clock. You could even have Logic as the Master clock, controlling the MPC's sequencer, without sending MIDI notes between them. In both case PC latency could be a problem, but I think Logic lets you do a master timing offset to get round that (guessing here).
