60 users with SCSI

How do you organize stuff on zip. I mostly use floppies now because I dont want the hassle of no folders...that comes with zip. What are some methods tips, tricks when organizing files on zip. Help me out. I wanna get into using zip more but its so easy to just use 1 or 2 floppies per song. Throw a rubber band around the two disks and thats a wrap. LOL

I did lots of math with a sharpie to figure out the best partition set up.

Wit A-T you have 20 partitions, 5Mb's each. This will hold 3 full memory kits plus 500 KB's for sequences & Songs.

The way I wonk this keeps me going. Sure sometimes you don't use all 5MBs and you can't fit another kit in there, but it isn't so bad, Zips are cheap, and it beats cycling through every PGM and ALL on the disk for the latest project.

Yeah im not worried about storage space being eaten up. That sounds pretty reasonable. So the newest stuff is on the latest partition with only 3 songs to scroll thru on each. That helps with knowing when songs were done in relation to each other. Not bad.

Even though its real easy to pick up a floppy and look at whats written on it to know what it is... this is reasonable. I will have to seriously consider this one. Thanks man.

Im scared to replace the floppy with an internal zip...

I seem to feel the need for that redundancy. I hear the SCSI can be kinda fussy. I dont wanna lose any songs having to turn off the MPC to get the SCSI to work. Have you had any problems with it? Whats your opinion on that?

thats a good idea on the partitioning elmacaco! that sounds a lot more organized than the 4 partitions ive been sifting thru! im gonna have to transfer my stuff to a disk partitioned in the way you mentioned...

ive never had any problems with my SCSI since i installed it, besides my floppy not working anymore afterwards... but that is supposedly from the 3.1 upgrade's incompatibility with my floppy drive, not the SCSI board!
i have heard though, that you have to be careful and make sure not to mess with the SCSI cable while the MPC is powered on, otherwise you might blow your SCSI fuse... i just keep the SCSI cable always screwed in tightly on both ends, and make sure to power up the SCSI zip drive before i turn on the MPC...

if i were you id go with an EXTERNAL SCSI ZIP DRIVE instead of an internal one... that way you can choose between using your floppy drive or your SCSI zip!

I contacted Roger Linn and they said there's no problems with the MPC-60 II and the new OS 3.10- Whatta relief.....

Thanks Fo, I did a lot of stoned math to get it that way. The idea is to get something bigger than a floppy or 3 (2 for full samples, one for sequences)
big enough to leave you some room to work, but not too big so you lose yourself trying to find a particular sample or kit.

I also thought 5 MB's would be easy to remember rather than something weird like 7.2 or somesuch. I tend to use the first 3 or 4 characters to name the sounds from one kit. So the for the Tutor's kits, the first kick is TUTBD1, TUTSD1, TUTCLAP1 or TUTCLP1.

Or whatever, get creative, but make sure they are linked to a program by name.

I haven't had a problem with the SCSI since I installed it.

Drumat!c? What did you ask them? the 60II works fine with the 3.10 OS. Get it already homie, trust me, it will blow you away.

I know with older devices SCSI can be kind of fussy. Maybe it was just my cable but, I have had times when the 60 couldnt detect my zip. Im gonna get a new cable for the MPC and use the other one on the EMAX and see if I get similar results. Your 5mb partition idea is definately on point tho. Since I only use the MPC really for drums I may even go smaller than that if possible. We shall see tho. Thanx again.

I'm still being told that the machine needs to delete samples and sequences before it resamples!?

What's the deal with that!?

I forgot to mention,

The 60 also has a file limit per partition, 250 or something.

I did the math on that too, but have only run over the file limit on one partition, so smaller might be good as well.

Drumat!c, if you have your memory full it will need to do that, not sure why it would say that unless you have filled your memory.
