It is interesting to speculate. 4000xl, 4500 or 5000 sounds more apealing as it would most likely improve on or go with the Z engine (a REAL sampler unlike the other MPCs have). Makes me wonder if a 3500 would still have the same old engine thats been used over and over and over again. I'm not going to buy any of these new crap MPCs (everything from 1k and newer) unless they actually have NEW sound generation or sequencing posibilities. And no, "chop shop" doesn't offer anything you couldn't already do since the 60. They could just simply redo the 4k OS and re-release that like they did with the black 1k.

Why would anyone be shocked that akai would release an MPC 3500?

If I could get an MPC with two awesome AD converters and DA converters plus firewire that would stream all samples to its own track so that my DAW recognises the MPC as a input device. All the midi to be sent the over firewire as well.

That would suit my needs perfect. Maybe SPDIF in and out and midi in and out port and possibly a phono preamp.

Eight outs means I need to buy a soundcard with eight ins. What is the point of having digital sent to analogue and then back to digital, other than to track through some high end outboard? How many MPC users have access to that kinda gear?

All the producers who want to track their beats through pres could get the 2500, 4000, 1000, 2000xl etc.

Better A/D would be nice... but I think that is one of those features they will always leave audiophiles to do with outboard sampling through a top notch A/D converter and interface and keep their costs down. There already is an MPC with 8 digital outs... the mpc4k with the adat card. ADAT makes much more sense for a product like this since its a defined technology thats been around for a while and they have already figured out. With firewire we would be plauged with crappy drivers that don't and might never work right, plus you would be limited to only a computer with those drivers, no chance of linking up with their multitrack recorders (that would be shooting themselves in the foot). Better they stick with a standard and work on the real meat of the machine. If they stick with the Z engine, there is no reason why ADAT wouldn't be available if not standard.

SPDIF in/out has been available on every MPC since the 2k (except the 500). Phono preamp is on the 4k. I always figured anyone with turntables would already have a mixer with a phone pre, but I guess it can never hurt to have an extra convenience to get a quick sample. I'd rather see them take the sequencer to new levels more than anything. It's already a badass sequencer, but with some missing features from the competition in there it would be unstopable.

I think it would be the shit if you could change your output settings from 8 bit, 12 bit, 16 bit, 24 bit.

I know this is an old post. I think that whatever the new high end mpc is, it should definitley be laced up with AES, in and out. Unlike spdif, AES is the only 2 channel professional format that can be trusted with sample rates higher than 48k. I believe if the new machine is to be truly regarded as a professional piece of equipment, it should include a professional digital format. Not to say that MPC's haven't been used professionally, that's retarded, but I think it will allow more flexability for the bedroom producer who would like to use higher end converters. My 2 cents.

Firewire is pretty decent. Unless you want to use some other type of DA to put the MPC sounds through some external hardware. I doubt too many MPC users will be in that category. You can still do that from your DAW.

Firewire into a PC/Mac is an awesome option. It covers most bases.

the 3500 should have a build in maschiendrum...va synthesis....samplestream...

what it really needs a theremin antenna!

and it could double up as a radio antenna, so you can sample off the internal radio!

And make a nice cup of coffee for those late night sessions.
