not understanding digital recorders

i want to buy the korg D16XD digital recorder. but as i was looking at the specs it said something that like 1-8 input channels and 9-16 recorder. what does that mean. If i go ahead and buy this will I actually be able to put instruments on all 16 tracks?

Yes.

But if you want to record 16 tracks simultaneously you will need the optional 8 input board for it.

What wires do I use to connect the assignable outs from my mpc and motif es to the recorder and do i use the same cables to connect to a 24 channel mixer?

You would need 1/4 inch cables to connect all your gear to the recorder, as I said before, if you need more than 8 inputs you will need the AIB8 expansion board.

I know I need 1/4 phone cables like this:

I'm confused I need you to be more specific on 1/4 inch cables.
